Job Summary

Join AFCA as a Sessional Ombudsman and Make a Meaningful Impact in Investment and Advice (I&) disputes.

The I&A decision-making team at AFCA led by Lead Ombudsman Shail Singh plays a pivotal role in resolving complex complaints and working closely with regulatory industry and consumer stakeholders to address key issues affecting the investment and advice sector.

We are seeking an experienced Sessional Ombudsman to join our dynamic highly collaborative team. This is an opportunity to contribute your expertise on a flexible perengagement basis supporting fair and timely dispute resolution. As part of our pool of skilled disputeresolution professionals youll have access to AFCAs resources specialist teams and ongoing support. 

Engagements vary based on your availability ranging from one day a week for several months to a few days per month or longer-term arrangements. Its flexibility with purpose and allows you to pursue other interests or responsibilities.

This role is ideally suited to a senior legally qualified professional with deep I&A sector experience and a proven record of achievement. This is a Boardappointed fixedterm position for three years with the flexibility to work remotely if that suits your lifestyle.

Qualifications :

Our team is at the forefront of complaint resolution engaging with industry and consumer groups to tackle key issues affecting I&A customers. This broad area includes complaints against financial planners stockbrokers managed funds timeshares traditional trustees cryptocurrency wallet providers and even horse-racing syndicates! While expertise in all these areas isnt necessary knowledge in at least one is required and multiple areas are highly desirable.

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Legal Expertise: Legal qualifications with senior executive experience.
  • Industry Knowledge: Experience in financial planning stockbroking managed funds cryptocurrency or derivatives. 
  • Diverse Backgrounds: Experience in tribunals EDR schemes regulatory agencies related business entities or private practice.
  • Analytical Prowess: Strong analytical skills to manage complex issues and a busy caseload.
  • Communication Excellence: High-level written and verbal skills to engage with the insurance sector and community.
  • Simplicity in Complexity: Ability to explain complex concepts simply.
  • Decision Explanation: Skills to verbally explain decisions to firms and complainants.
  • Coaching Ability: Ability to coach and mentor junior staff.
  • Resilience and Determination: Strong resilience and focus to handle challenges and public scrutiny.
  • Engagement Skills: Excellent skills to build positive relationships.
