About the opportunity

The Health Service Engagement Officer supports the implementation of AUS HEARTS in primary healthcare services located in Far West and Western NSW. The role involves engaging health services/practices developing effective working relationships with healthcare teams onboarding and coaching and facilitating quality improvement activities.

The university is seeking to employ a Health Service Engagement Officer (HEO 6) to the team for the MRFF-funded multidisciplinary researchproject - AUS HEARTS. The AUS HEARTS project will adapt and implement the World Health Organizations HEARTS approach which has been successfully used in over 30 countries to the unique context of regional and rural Australia. The project will focus on Far West and Western NSW where hypertension rates are 10% higher than the national average.

The primary goal of the AUS HEARTS project is to improve the detection and management of hypertension to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes in rural communities. By providing a simple and standardised approach for busy primary care clinics the project aims to ensure that more people receive effective treatment for high blood pressure.


The AUS HEARTS project is committed to improving cardiovascular health in regional and rural areas through community collaboration team-based care and strategic partnerships. It involves working closely with local communities and health services to adapt the HEARTS program to their specific needs using multidisciplinary healthcare teams to identify and manage high blood pressure. The project involves a broad network of investigators and partner organisations including the Royal Flying Doctor Service local pharmacies and general practices and several national peak bodies. The research aims to implement HEARTS and evaluate how effective this approach is for managing hypertension in regional Australia.

NOTE- there are two positions are available with flexibility to appoint suitable candidates in either a fulltime or parttime capacity.

One role will be in Broken Hill operating from the Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health in the Far West region.
The location of the second role is flexible based in a town located within the Western New South Wales region.

Both roles may require travel to multiple community and primary health care facilities in the Far West or Western New south Wales regions.

Key Requirement- The successful candidates must reside in Far West or Western New South Wales to ensure strong local engagement community presence and effective regional program delivery.

Your key responsibilities will be to

  • Develop effective working relationships with primary healthcare services to implement AUS HEARTS

  • Support services/practices to deliver the AUS HEARTS program in accordance with the agreed clinical pathway treatment protocol and system for monitoring

  • Collaborate with the AUS HEARTS Operations team to develop resources and training material tailored to the needs of primary healthcare practices

  • Onboard new practices and provide coaching training and support to practice staff using formal change management strategies

  • Serve as a liaison between the AUS HEARTS Operations team and primary healthcare services fostering communication and collaboration

  • Champion and support implementation of quality improvement measures to improve patient outcomes

  • Timely and accurate reporting to AUS HEARTS Operations team and key internal and external stakeholders as required

  • Contribute to risk identification management and mitigation consistent with risk management policies and procedures

  • Collect analyse and present data to practice staff to understand performance and target areas for improvement

  • Follow ethics guidelines and workplace health and safety regulations and uphold principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) for clinical trials

  • Undertake other duties appropriate within the classification level as required.

About you

  • Bachelors Degree Health or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience

  • Strong understanding of primary health care in the Australian context

  • High level interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills with the ability to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders

  • Experience facilitating program delivery in health services primary care or similar environment

  • Skills and ability to train and facilitate quality improvement activities

  • Hold a current Drivers License access to a reliable vehicle for site visits

  • Clearance to work on a NSW Health site.
