The Purpose

The Dean of School of Business & Innovation provides School-level academic leadership governance and strategic direction ensuring the long-term academic quality reputation and sustainability of the School The role sets the academic vision leads the Schools academic plan and holds accountability for academic standards regulatory confidence portfolio performance and external reputation. The Dean operates at School and institutional level focusing on strategy portfolio direction performance oversight and academic risk rather than programme-level delivery.

Working through Academic Directors Heads of Department Assistant Academic Directors and Programme Level Managers the Dean ensures that disciplines programmes and areas of specialist academic focus within the School collectively deliver strong outcomes for students and the institution. The Dean represents the School internally and externally contributes to institutional academic planning and exercises senior academic judgement where quality performance or reputation is at risk.

The Person

You are a senior academic leader with strong judgement credibility and a track record of academic leadership within higher education. You are comfortable making evidence-based decisions balancing academic ambition with institutional context and taking responsibility for outcomes at School level.

You communicate clearly and authoritatively with academic teams and senior colleagues and are trusted to uphold academic standards and student outcomes. You are strategic without being detached from delivery able to engage with academic detail when required while maintaining a clear focus on coherence performance and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

School Strategy and Academic Leadership

  • Set and lead the Schools academic strategy in line with institutional priorities and market context.

  • Define portfolio direction across disciplines programmes and areas of specialist academic focus within the School.

  • Provide clear leadership to Academic Directors and Heads of Department setting expectations priorities and accountability.

  • Work with the Head of Learning & Teaching Enablement to shape the development of institutional approaches to learning teaching and assessment.

Portfolio Performance and Planning

  • Hold oversight of academic and financial performance across the School.

  • Use evidence to develop and assess academic proposals for investment development enhancement and rationalisation contributing to institutional planning and decision-making processes.

  • Contribute to multi-year academic and resource planning in partnership with institutional colleagues.

Quality Standards and Governance

  • Hold accountability for academic standards quality assurance and regulatory confidence within the School.

  • Oversee validation review and revalidation outcomes intervening where there is material risk to standards reputation or compliance.

  • Work closely with the Registrar and governance teams on academic risk policy and assurance.

  • Ensure that institutional learning teaching and assessment principles are effectively implemented across the School and that their impact on academic quality and student outcomes is monitored and assured.

People Capability and Resourcing

  • Oversee academic leadership capacity succession planning and senior academic appointments within the School in alignment with institutional progression and development frameworks.

  • Support the development and performance of academic leaders across the School.

  • Work with the Head of Faculty Management to address strategic resourcing priorities and academic capability issues within the School.

External Engagement and Reputation

  • Represent the School with external partners professional bodies and key stakeholders.

  • Build relationships that enhance academic credibility relevance and reputation.

  • Contribute to institutional initiatives that strengthen market position and student outcomes.

Person Specification

Essential

  • A Masters degree (NFQ Level 9) or equivalent combined with significant senior academic experience and academic leadership within higher education.

  • Significant senior academic leadership experience with clear accountability for academic quality performance and outcomes at School Faculty or equivalent level.

  • Strong academic credibility demonstrated through sustained academic practice and leadership rather than qualifications alone.

  • Sound working knowledge of academic governance quality assurance and regulatory frameworks within higher education.

  • Experience leading academic strategy portfolio planning and evidence-based decisions on programme development enhancement or retirement.

  • Proven ability to interpret academic financial and performance data to inform strategic judgement and decision-making.

  • Credibility and confidence in representing an academic School with senior internal stakeholders and external partners.

Desirable

  • A doctoral qualification (NFQ Level 10) or equivalent.

  • Experience of validation revalidation accreditation or regulatory review processes.

  • Academic experience complemented by industry or professional practice relevant to the Schools disciplines.

  • Experience contributing to organisational cultural or structural change within a higher education context.

  • Exposure to international education transnational delivery or partnership-based academic models.
