Description
The primary purpose of the Human Resources Generalist at Halifax Community College is to support the Human Resources Department and College in areas of recruiting onboarding employee benefits retirement planning and records organization and integrity. This position performs a full range of confidential and complex technical and administrative duties while exercising independent judgement to support the overall College mission & strategic direction.
Examples of Duties
Essential Functions:
- Coordinates College employment activities including preparing and posting position announcements applicant tracking and management coordinating interviews and facilitating pre-employment background checks.
- Provides guidance to supervisors on performance expectations documentation and performance management processes escalating complex issues to HR leadership as appropriate.
- Coordinates new hire orientation and onboarding processes including follow-up to ensure timely completion of required documentation and successful acclimation to the College.
- Administers employee benefits programs including medical dental life disability workers compensation retirement and supplemental insurance programs.
- Coordinates annual open enrollment for insurance and retirement benefits.
- Provides employee coaching and support related to benefits enrollment life events and system navigation using applicable online platforms.
- Assists with presentations and information sessions related to benefits and employee programs.
- Coordinates and administers routine leaves of absence including FMLA short- and long-term disability workers compensation and reasonable accommodation processes in collaboration with HR leadership as needed.
- Serves as system administrator for designated HR systems including benefits platforms learning management systems and HRIS modules.
- Maintains HRIS data accuracy and integrity. Maintains secure confidential and complete personnel records in accordance with College policy and applicable regulations.
- Serves on College committees and task forces as assigned.
- Participates in required campus events including graduation professional development activities and employee meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned to support the mission of the Human Resources Department and the strategic direction of the College.
The College reserves the right to alter duties responsibilities conditions working hours and job title as necessary.Minimum/Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Human Resources Business or a related field or HR Certification and equivalent education and work experience
- Knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices
- Strong interpersonal organizational and documentation skills.
- Excellent customer service as well as strong oral and written communication skills
- Must be detail oriented and comfortable in a multitasking environment able to adjust priorities as the situation dictates;
- Ability to maintain a positive professional image and be sensitive to confidential information
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with HRIS and HR technology platforms
- Minimum of three years of HR Generalist experience
- HRCI or SHRM Certification is preferred.
