BMO Commercial Bankings growing Technology practice is hiring a strong collaborative and self-starting Managing Director Technology Banking. BMO is the 7th largest bank in North America and the 4th largest commercial lender with aggressive growth ambitions in the U.S. BMO has a solid foundation in the Technology industry with a client portfolio ranging from growth-stage companies to mature publicly listed household names. Our dedicated Technology Banking group services all these companies with a one-stop-shop wholistic client coverage approach. The growth of our team is a strategic priority for the bank with full support from executive leadership. The Technology Banking team is supported by a dedicated Technology credit underwriting and portfolio management team as well as BMOs Commercial- and Investment Banking product platform.

The Managing Director will play an important role in the Technology Banking groups buildout charged with driving the growth of the Technology Banking franchise and portfolio in the Southwestern U.S. reporting directly into the Head of Technology Banking. The role as a player-coach will be responsible for building a team brand and portfolio in the Southwestern U.S. of smaller to larger sized private and publicly listed Technology companies with a diverse and complex range of banking and finance needs.

The ideal candidate will be proactive and drive initiatives by actively developing the BMO Technology Banking brand and reputation sourcing strong talent for the team pursuing new business opportunities acquiring new clients and delivering BMOs entire commercial banking and capital markets platform. The candidate will be responsible for managing a group of relationship managers as well as a portfolio of important client relationships and act as a liaison between clients and different product partners and stakeholders. Additionally they will consistently generate meaningful revenue from sales and syndications while ensuring compliance with internal control standards audit requirements and regulatory policies for themselves and their team.

Key requirements of the role:

  • Ability to lead inspire and manage a team of relationship managers of various seniority and experience levels
  • Strong business development and marketing acumen. Leads market coverage strategies to expand portfolios identify opportunities and align with business goals
  • Deep understanding of the Technology industry and its sub-sectors from a business development and credit risk analysis perspective
  • Solid understanding of capital structure considerations and experienced in working with product partners in capital markets and investment banking.
  • Ability to have strategic conversations with C-Suite executives at prospect companies and become their trusted advisor
  • Well connected across the Technology eco-system with a track-record of successful business development in this industry sector
  • Leverages analysis tools to nurture and grow a portfolio that exceeds ROE thresholds and evaluates client returns on a proactive basis

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Leads and/or partners for brand-building and marketing events in-market
  • Ongoing development of a talent board for the market
  • Advises on sales strategy based on a deep understanding of the market competitors client needs and business growth opportunities
  • Develops the business case by identifying needs analysing potential options and assessing expected return on investment
  • Represents bank at industry forums and conferences leveraging insights on trends competition and emerging products to drive strategic decision-making
  • Oversees resource allocation for the team ensuring effective use of personnel and budgets to meet organizational goals enhance team performance and drive client satisfaction
  • Manages the risk of the assigned complex portfolio in a timely and precise manner
  • Acts as daily sales contact for clients on sales related questions such as product information pricing implementation timeframes and requirements
  • Acts as an escalation point for complex client issues using strategic problem-solving to resolve conflicts and maintaining strong client relationships
  • Gathers data to advance sale process and completes all required documentation
  • Engages in pre-sales activities such as pitch preparation client research preparation of prospect and client files for further action
  • Tracks implementation requests to keep the process on track with timelines
  • Involved with sales and service administration and processing ensuring client experience is seamless and opportunities are identified and met
  • Maintains current client information on Bank system/files to ensure client history is accurate and complete
  • Applies expertise and thinks creatively to address unique or ambiguous situations and to find solutions to problems that can be complex and non-routine
  • Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed

Qualifications:

  • Typically 10 years of relevant experience and post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Technical leader viewed as a thought leader for innovation
  • Experience directly or indirectly managing a group of bankers
  • Solid commercial credit knowledge
  • Demonstrated history of successful business development including ability to network in external markets
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the technology industry and its markets competitive environment
  • Experience in contract negotiations with both clients and legal counsel
  • Experience drafting responses to complex RFPs
  • Expert verbal & written communication skills
  • Expert analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Expert collaboration & team skills; with a focus on cross-group collaboration
  • Able to manage ambiguity

Salary:

$164400.00 - $285600.00

The above represents BMO Financial Groups pay range and type.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location skills experience education and qualifications for the role and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Groups expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Groups total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives discretionary bonuses as well as other perks and rewards.
