This registered nurse position is assigned to the Jackson Parish Health Unit and works as a public health nurse in the clinical setting participates in the parish level health unit operation and performs job duties as outlined and assigned. This RN practices within the scope of practice designated by the Louisiana Practice Act (LRS 37:911) adheres to the policies procedures and standards of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals/Office of Public Health and is accountable for promoting a positive image and working harmoniously with other members of the health care team. Reports administratively to the Regional Nurse Manager and has functional supervision from the RN Supervisor A in Caldwell Parish.
This position requires routine statewide duties including fieldwork inspections investigations or direct services that extend beyond the employees domicile parish. These statewide responsibilities are an inherent and ongoing part of the job and may require frequent travel.Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a current Louisiana Registered Nurse license or a temporary permit or multi-state license issued by a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC/eNLC) state to practice as a registered nurse plus one of the following:
Two years of experience as a licensed registered nurse; OR
A bachelors degree in nursing plus one year of experience as a licensed registered nurse; OR
A masters degree in nursing or public health plus one year of experience as a licensed registered nurse; OR
A doctorate in nursing or public health.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
- Provides direct care to patients within the Region and acts as the Lead Nurse for Jackson Parish Health Unit
- Serves as a point of contact on nursing responsibilities within Jackson Parish Health Unit
- Serves as a Public Health Nurse at Jackson Parish Health Unit working in all programs such as WIC Immunization Reproductive Health as an STD certified RN and Infectious Diseases within public health units communities shelters and /or any additional assigned sites designated by the Louisiana Department of Health /Office of Public Health.
- Provides nursing care by conducting examinations medical treatments and/or counseling in public health services. Refers and links individuals or families to other community resources. Administers required medications and immunizations. Provides education on medications side effects adverse reactions care and/or referral. Enters data into EHR.
- Conducts comprehensive health and developmental assessments including anthropometric measurements to identify deviations from normal growth and development; formulates public health nursing care plans and initiates referrals as appropriate
- Obtains blood specimens and other specimens for analysis. Interprets laboratory results. Provides counseling intervention treatment and follow up according to standing orders and policy guidelines.
- Provides health education materials to individuals families or community groups on preventive health care health risks and strategies for promoting or protecting health population-wide health promotion/risk reduction programs information on disease outbreaks weather emergencies weapons of mass destruction.
- Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement process reflecting standards of public health competencies and nursing care performance in order to assure quality of care.
- Provides professional nursing care in response to emergency situations in the community and statewide in the staffing of Special Needs Shelters Strategic National Stockpile and other public health responses within the scope of professional nursing practice and policies and procedures of OPH.
- Utilizes interpersonal communication skills in a customer-focused environment which includes all visitors employees and clients. Accepts and performs additional duties not listed but necessary for the smooth operation of the work unit or to help ensure quality of agency services.
