Job Description

The post holder will specifically be required to support the application of the University health and safety management framework at Malaysia Campus.

The post holder needs to support development and implementation of the Universitys health & safety management framework and supporting processes in line with the Universitys strategic objectives to ensure compliance with relevant legislation in Malaysia the University Health and Safety Policy and current best practices across the wide range of activities undertaken by the University. It is also required to provide a comprehensive fire safety support to the Safety and Risk Office by advising the Head of Health and Safety and all members of the University community on all matters relating to fire safety legislation and standards thus ensuring compliance and uniformity in terms of fire safety compliance throughout the University.

The role will be based at the Universitys campus in Putrajaya the administrative capital of Malaysia.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Contribute to development and implementation of HWUM health & safety management framework and supporting procedures to ensure compliance with relevant statutory requirements and Industry Codes of Practice.
  2. Support the development of safe operational procedures in laboratory science environment.
  3. Support the development and delivery of various applicable health and safety training.
  4. Support the monthly workplace health & safety inspections and audits.
  5. Support Investigations into accidents incidents and dangerous occurrences to establish root causes and implement initiatives to prevent recurrences.
  6. Assess the suitability of HIRARC assessments for laboratories internal & external events and workshops.
  7. Provide support and advice to the Laboratory department and Lab H&S Committee.
  8. Provide support to the effective implementation of the HWUM Fire Strategy and associated processes.
  9. Provide support to the HWUM Emergency Response Team activities and responses.
  10. Administer all accident and incident data entries into the SHIELD system.
  11. Administer the global i-HASCO training system and track the completion of all campus staff for the mandatory H&S training modules.
  12. Ensure that all important H&S documents are uploaded and stored in the HWUM Health & Safety SharePoint Site.
  13. Support the management of injuries and illnesses involving staff and students inside the campus First Aid room and its data entries into SHIELD system.
  14. Assist in the coordination and delivery of biannual emergency drills and targeted Health & Safety and emergency response training.
  15. Support initiatives to promote a culture of health and safety awareness among staff students and contractors through campaigns and activities.
  16. Assist in conducting Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) to identify occupational hazards and maintain a comprehensive database.
  17. Assist in reviewing Permit to Work (PTW) applications and supporting documents for contractor and maintenance activities to ensure compliance with HWUM H&S requirements and safe work practices.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Degree in a science-related subject NIOSH
  • Certificate or equivalent qualification
  • Relevant experience within a university science or research environment
  • Demonstrable experience in the development and application of HIRARC assessment processes
  • Sound communication skills and personal qualities to work with advise and influence at all levels within the University.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and deliver innovative solutions to complex problems
  • IT skills (e.g. MS Word Excel PowerPoint) to allow the production of professional reports/papers/proposals to senior management
  • Appropriate personal organisational time management and prioritisation skills
  • Strong teamworking skills with the ability to the manage collaborative working across multidisciplinary teams

Desirable

  • Membership of NIOSH
  • First aid or nursing qualification
  • Relevant experience in conducting laboratory health & safety inspections
  • Demonstrable experience of interaction with electronic health & safety systems and e-learning packages
