The Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotias 23000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4100 bridges. Our Provincial Outfits Division plays a critical role in safe and effective highway maintenance operations including line painting mowing brush cutting activities and bridge inspections throughout the province.

About Our Opportunity

The Operations Supervisor oversees staff supervision and performance plans prioritizes coordinates and oversees the Department maintenance and restoration activities in accordance with the Departments Maintenance Standards and Supervisor oversees the use of resources (i.e. labour equipment and materials) directly organizes plans and schedules job priorities delegates assignments and equipment for daily work sites. They also monitor job activity progress and assigned budgets and adjust workload and schedules to accommodate and address emergencies and special requests or situations and ensures all work is completed timely effectively and in a safe manner.

Primary Accountabilities

You also supervise and direct the maintenance program by: assisting management in developing a plan of action including the planning of routes staffing assignments; ensuring line paint and other supplies are available; monitoring paint application rates and adherence to policies; ensuring in consultation with Fleet Service Coordinators that equipment servicing and repairs are completed; and providing updates to the Manager related to maintenance work potential issues and recommendations as required. Additionally you coordinate and control the operation of Department equipment prioritize and arrange for repair of disabled equipment and arrange for replacement machines in consultation with the Manager or Fleet Service Coordinators when required from the Department pool and/or private sources.

You respond to requests concerns and complaints from the public and municipal authorities. You also address situations or any activity associated with Department operations or right of way and respond through correspondence and reports including updates to via the departments ticket tracking system or recommend a course of action to the Manager when necessary.

While utilizing your expertise you will also oversee maintenance repair and restoration while ensuring proper service within your geographic area. You will schedule staff and equipment provide technical advice to support management and help set priorities and budgets. You will administer HR and Department policies procedures and collective agreements while ensuring compliance with Department plans specifications and regulations.

Qualifications and Experience

As the successful candidate you hold a 2-year technical diploma in arelated fieldas well as 6 years of related maintenance and construction experience (such as civil road maintenance commercial building construction oil and gas forestry etc.). An equivalent combination of experience and a technical diploma will be considered.

As the ideal candidate you have:

  • Experience in cost estimation budget management inventory and expenditure control and technical accomplishment.
  • The ability to understand and administer acts regulations policies and procedures collective agreements and technical specifications.
  • Computer proficiency including knowledge of spreadsheet software and creation word processing and email applications.
  • Strong supervisory skills providing input to the performance management and training needs of your crew.
  • Ability to adhere to and promote a safe healthy and engaged work culture.
  • Professional communication skills both oral and written for collaborating with other government agencies consultants contractors and members of the public.
  • Well-developed planning and organizational skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
  • The ability to maintain a professional attitude and hold a high standard of customer service.

Knowledge of maintenance planning and adhering to budgets operations maintenance and scheduling of heavy equipment is desirable. Previous experience administering collective agreements would be considered assets. Familiarity with Environmental regulations Occupational Health and Safety Act and Department policies and procedures are further assets to be considered.

Working Conditions

You will travel regularly throughout your designated work area. Travel is often more than your scheduled hours. Inspection of Right-of-Ways and infrastructure often requires working in precarious positions or environments.

Salary Range: $2770.60- $3236.97Bi-Weekly
