Course Description:

Dictatorships Democracy and Battles for Memory in Contemporary Latin America
This course will examine the rise and fall of dictatorships the process of democratization and the battles for collective memory in Latin America from the mid-twentieth century to the present. We will reflect on the internal factors (nationalism populism economic instability) and external factors (U.S. interventions Cold War globalization and neoliberalism) that led to the emergence of dictatorships and authoritarian regimes in the region. We will also analyze the multiple processes of democratization justice and reconciliation at the end of the twentieth century. Finally we will explore the complexity of ongoing struggles initiatives and narratives aimed at constructing and re-signifying collective memory.
