Housing Assistance Corporation seeks a nonprofit finance leader to serve as its Assistant Director of Finance. The ideal candidate will hold experience in nonprofit or governmental fiscal management federal state and private grants management and leadership in financial management internal controls and organizational finance operations. Housing Assistance Corporation has doubled its funding and staff in the last two years thus increasing financial responsibilities. Mission: The Housing Assistance Corporation is a non-profit organization committed to providing safe and affordable housing for persons of limited income living in Henderson County North Carolina and surrounding areas. They believe every human being deserves the opportunity to live in a decent home.

Reporting Structure: The Assistant Director of Finance reports to the Director of Finance.

Total Staff and Budget: 29 staff members and an annual budget of $10M.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience and begins in the mid $60Ks.

Working Environment/Location: In Office/Hendersonville

Key Responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Finance

Reporting to the Director of Finance this role oversees the integrity of the financial systems ensures compliance with all Federal State and donor requirements and plays a critical role in advancing the organizations long-term financial sustainability and strategic objectives. This position combines high-level financial stewardship with hands-on leadership of day-to-day accounting operations and cross-departmental financial management. The Assistant Director of Finance is a key advisor to leadership a steward of public and private funds and a driver of continuous improvement in financial systems controls and reporting.

Financial Leadership & Oversight

  • Provide strategic leadership and management oversight of the organizations accounting and financial operations including general ledger accounts payable accounts receivable payroll allocations and cash management.
  • Ensure the integrity accuracy and timeliness of all financial records and reports in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit best practices.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to the Director of Finance and senior leadership in financial planning analysis and organizational decision-making.
  • Oversee monthly quarterly and year-end close processes including preparation of financial statements supporting schedules and management reports.
  • Lead the organizations audit preparation process and serve as a primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Ensure strong internal controls risk management practices and financial governance across the organization.
  • Monitor cash flow investments and reserves and develop forecasts and long-range financial projections.
  • Lead the continuous improvement of financial systems processes and internal controls including automation and efficiency initiatives.

Budgeting Planning & Organizational Finance
  • Play a lead role in the development monitoring and long-term planning of the organizations operating and program budgets.
  • Partner with program construction housing and development teams to ensure sound financial planning cost control and financial accountability across all initiatives.
  • Oversee financial management of construction infrastructure and housing development projects in coordination with the Director of Finance and project leadership.
  • Provide high-level financial analysis scenario modeling and decision support to leadership and the Board as needed.
  • Support administration and financial oversight of the organizations Revolving Loan Fund and other special financing programs.


Grant Compliance and Funding Stewardship

  • Ensure accurate grant budgeting cost allocation revenue recognition reimbursement requests and financial reporting.
  • Serve as a senior financial partner to the Grants Manager and program leadership throughout the full grant lifecycle from application through closeout.
  • Maintain strong systems for tracking awards compliance deadlines audits and reporting obligations.
  • Lead preparation for grant monitoring visits funder audits and Single Audits related to financial compliance.


Governance Administration & Risk Management

  • Lead the development implementation and ongoing refinement of financial policies procedures and internal control frameworks.
  • Oversee organizational insurance coverage renewals and compliance documentation.
  • Provide executive oversight of payroll benefits administration and wage allocation systems.
  • Ensure financial oversight of property management reporting vehicle and asset records and other administrative financial systems.
  • Promote a culture of accountability transparency and strong financial stewardship across the organization.


Leadership & Organizational Impact


  • Provide leadership mentorship and professional development for finance staff.
  • Foster strong cross-departmental partnerships and serve as a trusted financial liaison to program and operational leadership.
  • Represent the finance function in internal leadership discussions to streamline processes to contribute to organization-wide strategic planning initiatives.
  • Perform other executive-level duties as assigned in support of the organizations mission.


The Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • 5 plus years of progressive responsibility in nonprofit or governmental accounting and financial management or equivalent.
  • Significant experience with federal state and private grants management compliance and audit processes.
  • Demonstrated leadership in financial management internal controls and organizational finance operations.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting standards.
  • High proficiency in QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.
  • Proven ability to lead teams manage complex financial operations and partner effectively with senior leadership.
  • Exceptional analytical communication and leadership skills.
  • Highest standards of integrity judgment and confidentiality.
  • Alignment to the mission vision and core values.
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance Business Administration or related field required; CPA or advanced degree preferred.

Today programs offered by Housing Assistance are Housing Counseling Single-Family new home construction Multifamily unit construction Home Repair and Disaster Recovery.
