Description of Work

The North Carolina Zoo is seeking a self-motivated and team-oriented Maintenance/Construction Technician III (Weekend PM&E Lead). This is a lead working position which reports to the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor III with oversight and responsibility for PM&E maintenance section. Responsibilities will overlap at times. Position will be required to perform other tasks as needed and may be reassigned to a different group of trades such as general maintenance and caging depending on the needs of the organization.

Key Responsibilities
General Plumbing Repairs (Indoor Outdoor Restaurants) including sweating copper glue PVC PEX repairs faucets and flush valves unclog drains run Jetter
General Electrical Repairs including replacing switches receptacles reset breakers repair lights
General HVAC Repairs including reset units BAS system changes
General Maintenance Repairs

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed onthe vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge skills and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are notrequired. Applicants who possess the following are preferred:

  • General knowledge of plumbing repairs and best practices

  • General knowledge of electrical repair

  • General understanding of HVAC operation and maintenance

  • General maintenance repair experience.

Position/Physical Requirements

  • Job offer is contingent upon passing a pre-employment screen conducted by assigned provider.

  • Work schedule is Thursday - Monday 7:00am - 4:00pm

  • Considered Essential/Mandatory Staff and required to work on adverse weather days during zoo emergencies.

  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

  • Perform work in confined spaces such as filter pits vaults sumps tanks and mechanical rooms in accordance with safety protocols

  • Required to participate in an occupational health program due to contact with animal containment areas.

  • Must be able to regularly and safely: lift up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally; bend stoop and work in tight spaces; climb stairs and ladders; move over and about all types of equipment to inspect analyze and perform repairs.

  • Must have good physical agility strength good hearing good vision and perform physically demanding labor in extremes of weather and challenging physical environments such as animal enclosures.

  • Must be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic.

  • Must have very good written and oral communication skills.

  • Must have good interpersonal/teamwork skills

  • Be able to use a multimeter

Minimum Education and Experience

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience. High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

AND

two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas;

OR

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification

May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I II III or Universal technician as required by Title 40 Code of Federal Regulations Part 82 Subpart F.
