Role Title

Engineering Manager

JOB SUMMARY

The Engineer Manager is responsible for providing technical leadership and engineering management across capital projects shutdowns and furnace rebuilds from project initiation through execution handover and close-out. The role ensures that engineering activities are safely executed technically sound cost-effective and aligned with approved project scope schedule budget and governance requirements. The engineering manager leads multidisciplinary engineering teams manages engineering contractors and OEMs supports construction and commissioning activities and ensures full compliance with statutory safety and corporate standards while delivering assets that meet operational and lifecycle requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Project Management:
  • Provide overall engineering leadership across assigned capital projects shutdowns and furnace rebuilds from concept through close-out.
  • Manage engineering scope deliverables interfaces and resources in line with approved project baselines (scope cost schedule).
  • Ensure effective integration between engineering disciplines (mechanical structural electrical control & instrumentation civil piping).
  • Support and guide Project Managers and Engineers in planning execution and reporting.
  • Act as the key technical authority for engineering-related decisions and change management.

  • Assist in managing the safety aspects during construction:
  • Embed Zero Harm principles into all engineering and construction activities.
  • Minimise risk profiles where possible within the engineering function. Assist with the conducting of Risk Assessments for construction activities (ongoing).
  • Ensure engineering designs are constructible safe and compliant with applicable safety standards and legislation.
  • Participate in HAZOPs HAZIDs constructability reviews and risk assessments.
  • Support contractor safety management method statement reviews and safe work procedure approvals.
  • Actively participate in site safety walks audits and incident investigations.

  • Assist with the initiation defining and planning the project (Concept & Feasibility):
  • Attend and participate Risk Assessments and HAZOP sessions.
  • Support front-end loading (FEL) activities including scope definition option studies and feasibility assessments.
  • Develop and review engineering philosophies design criteria and execution strategies.
  • Contribute to capital cost estimates schedules and risk registers.
  • Support procurement strategies including single-source motivations technical adjudications and vendor evaluations.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables align with operational maintenance and lifecycle requirements.
  • Assist and lead pre-constructability reviews of schedules.

  • Execute the project:
  • Lead engineering execution during detailed design procurement support construction and commissioning phases.
  • Manage engineering contractors consultants OEMs and specialist vendors.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables are issued in line with the project schedule and construction needs.
  • Control technical queries deviations and changes through formal management of change (MOC) processes.
  • Provide technical support during construction installation and commissioning particularly during shutdown and furnace rebuild activities.

  • Assist with the hand over and close out of operations.
  • Assist with arranging and managing of Hot Commissioning with the client.
  • Ensure all engineering documentation is complete accurate and handed over in accordance with company and client standards.
  • Support commissioning performance testing and operational readiness.
  • Ensure as-built drawings operating manuals maintenance strategies and asset data are completed and archived.
  • Participate in lessons-learned sessions and post-implementation reviews.

  • Contribute to project audits with regards to policies procedures and systems.
  • Ensure compliance with internal governance frameworks engineering standards and project control processes.
  • Support financial governance through cost control forecasting and approval processes.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory requirements codes of practice and industry standards.
  • Provide accurate and timely reporting to senior management and stakeholders.
  • Uphold ethical conduct transparency and accountability in all engineering activities.

CAPABILITIES REQUIRED TO DO THE ROLE

  • Experience Knowledge and Skills:
  • Minimum 5-8 years experience in engineering and project environments preferably within heavy industry mining smelting metallurgical plants or large industrial shutdowns.
  • Proven experience managing engineering on large capital projects and/or furnace rebuilds.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical structural and piping systems; exposure to refractory and copper cooling systems advantageous.
  • Solid understanding of EPC/EPCM project execution models.
  • Strong commercial awareness including cost estimating contract management and change control.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability with the ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and contractors.
  • Strong planning coordination and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Firm and assertive
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple priorities.

  • Qualifications:
  • B Tech MEng BSc /Btech/BEng GCC is preferred.
  • Professional registration with ECSA (Pr. Eng or eligible) is preferred.
  • Project Management Certificate or Diploma is advantageous.
  • Safety management training (e.g. construction regulations risk management) is beneficial.

  • Physical Requirement:
  • Certificate of fitness and ability to work in challenging conditions typical of smelter sites.
  • Ability to work on operational sites including active construction and shutdown environments.
  • Willingness to work extended hours during critical project phases and shutdowns.

  • Strong alignment with Zero Harm and safety-first culture.
  • Working knowledge of Project Management.
  • Exceptional multi-discipline engineering skills.
  • Good Project Planning and Scheduling skills.
  • Exceptional Engineering specification understanding.
  • Experience on furnaces in smelting industry preferably operations environment.
  • Experience in shutdown and rebuild execution will be advantageous.
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as necessary to meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as required.
  • High level of integrity professionalism and accountability.
