Job Summary
Key Responsibilities
Feed Management
- Provide full operational leadership for all feeding activities within the nursery with overall accountability for supervisors and feeding teams
- Plan manage and control the feeding budget including feed forecasting daily feed allocation consumption tracking and variance analysis against approved budgets
- Ensure strict compliance with approved feeding protocols including correct pellet sizing feeding frequency feed quantities accurate daily feed records and timely submission of feed requisitions
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives aimed at minimizing feed wastage reducing feed costs improving feeding discipline and optimising feed conversion ratios across all nursery cages
- Monitor feeding behaviour closely to identify early warning signs of stress disease or suboptimal performance and escalate risks timeously
Counting Operations
- Oversee all fish counting and transfer activities from nursery cages into grow-out systems with full accountability for the counting team
- Develop and manage cage stocking plans in line with approved budgeted stocking numbers and production forecasts
- Ensure accurate data collection reporting and reconciliation of counted stock against weekly and monthly plans
- Take responsibility for the calibration accuracy care and maintenance of counting equipment
- Oversee seining and transfer processes ensuring all standard operating procedures are strictly followed to minimise stress losses and inaccuracies
Sampling Operations
- Oversee all fish sampling activities including average body weight (ABW) sampling from nursery cages
- Ensure that sampling processes are conducted accurately and consistently in line with approved SOPs
- Develop weekly sampling plans brief and debrief sampling teams and ensure results are correctly captured and reported
- Take responsibility for the care maintenance and correct use of sampling equipment
- Monitor daily weekly and monthly sampling reports to ensure data accuracy and reliability for decision-making
Waste and Mortality Management
- Assume full managerial accountability for waste management processes including the collection counting recording and reporting of mortalities
- Manage budgeted resources related to waste handling consumables and materials
- Implement controls for the reconciliation and accountability of empty feed sacks and related consumables to prevent losses and inefficiencies
- Analyse mortality trends and implement corrective actions to reduce losses and protect production and financial performance
People Management and Leadership
- Develop and manage the nursery manpower budget ensuring optimal staffing levels efficient labour deployment and control of overtime and related costs
- Lead develop and implement structured training programmes within approved budgets focusing on best-practice feeding fish handling biosecurity animal welfare and stress reduction
- Manage workforce planning deployment performance monitoring and appraisal of feeders supervisors and support staff
- Oversee the collection analysis and communication of operational performance data from nursery cages to support operational and financial decision-making
- Act as the first point of escalation for employee relations matters including grievances disputes disciplinary issues and employee engagement initiatives
- Manage leave planning enforce compliance with health and safety requirements conduct regular safety briefings and ensure adherence to company policies and procedures
Quality Performance and Productivity
- Take full responsibility for achieving targeted growth rates survival rates and feed conversion ratios in line with approved operational and cost budgets
- Monitor and analyse nursery cage and unit performance against production targets identifying variances and implementing corrective actions
- Monitor fish health growth trends and feeding responses escalating risks that may impact productivity biosecurity or budget performance
- Evaluate feed quality and performance ensuring timely reporting and cost recovery actions in cases of sub-standard feed performance
Water Quality Management
- Oversee water quality monitoring programmes ensuring efficient use of resources within budget constraints
- Ensure accurate monitoring recording and reporting of key water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen and temperature
- Implement immediate corrective actions when dissolved oxygen levels fall below critical thresholds to prevent stock losses and financial impact
- Use water quality growth and performance data to inform operational planning forecasting and budgeting
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Agriculture Aquaculture Fisheries Science Biology or a related field
- Postgraduate qualifications or specialised aquaculture training will be an advantage
Skills and Competencies
- Strong technical knowledge of tilapia farming nursery operations fish nutrition water quality management and disease control
- Proven ability to manage intensive aquaculture operations with a strong focus on efficiency yield optimisation and cost control
- Strong analytical skills with experience in data analysis reporting and performance tracking
- Effective leadership and people management skills with the ability to lead teams in a structured disciplined operational environment
- Strong communication skills with the ability to convey technical information clearly to operational teams and senior management
- High level of discipline attention to detail and commitment to health safety and biosecurity standards
