GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 200 staff GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health Social Services Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.
GEGAC advocates for the self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that enhance social emotional and spiritual wellbeing with culture at the heart of everything we do.
Position Purpose
The Orange Door Aboriginal Practitioner will work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team of practitioners to deliver high quality safe and effective responses to Victorian women children families and persons using violence seeking support and safety through the Orange Door and keep the persons using violence in view. The Orange Door Practitioners will report to the Orange Door Team Leaders on a day-to-day basis with formal line management and supervision provided by GEGAC. They will also receive support and guidance from the Aboriginal Integrated Orange Door Practice Leader.
This position as does the Orange Door supports Aboriginal self-determination as a guiding principle and aims to:
Key Selection Criteria
Knowledge of safe and appropriate culturally centred practices for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander focused services including employment of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people
Demonstrated understanding of social physical economical and cultural strengths and challenges affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities and their ability to access adequate and quality services
An understanding of the MARAM (Multi-Agency Risk Assessment and Management) framework the Family Violence Act (2008) and the Child Youth and Family Act (2005)
Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to develop positive stakeholder relationships and communicate with diverse individuals at all levels both internally and externally
Understanding of the purpose and expectations of the Victorian Child Safe Standards and demonstrated commitment to contributing to a child safe organisation in both practice and culture
Ability to demonstrate resilience and meet targets and objectives within a fast-paced pressured environment
Strong written and verbal communication skills including writing reports
Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).
Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander cultures and understanding of the local Aboriginal Community. Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with people particularly Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander people. ESSENTIAL
A strong knowledge and understanding of the drivers/causes of family violence and child and family vulnerability as well as the child and family services and/or broader social services sector and their fundamental practices and theories is required. ESSENTIAL
Be proactive and self-starting; seize opportunities and act upon them; take responsibility for own actions. Proven ability to work with and maintain confidentiality and knowledge of privacy requirements relevant to the role. ESSENTIAL
Demonstrated professional work ethic and excellent time management skills
Demonstrated experience liaising with key stakeholders in relation to delivery of quality services. ESSENTIAL
Cooperates and works well with others in pursuit of team goals collaborates and shares information shows consideration concern and respect for others feelings and ideas accommodates and works well with the different working styles of others.
Excellent written oral interpersonal and communication skills with clients key stake holders and colleagues. ESSENTIAL
Proven ability to work in a flexible and client focussed way ESSENTIAL
Bachelor of Social Work or equivalent qualification and /or experience in line with the mandatory minimum qualification requirements for specialist family violence practitioners ESSENTIAL
Valid Victorian drivers licence ESSENTIAL
Current First Aid and CPR Certifications (or willingness to obtain) ESSENTIAL
A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check ESSENTIAL
A person of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander background DESIRABLE
Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGAC vaccination requirements ESSENTIAL
