HR Director / People & Compliance Leader
Construction & Trades Multi-Entity
Overview
We are a privately held construction group with multiple operating companies across the U.S. specializing in concrete paving masonry and related trades. The business currently operates at $30M in annual revenue and is scaling through organic growth and acquisitions.
We are hiring a senior HR leader to build and manage the people compliance and safety function across all entities as we move toward a centralized holding company structure.
This is a hands-on role in a field-based environment.
Responsibilities
Compliance & Risk
- Audit and maintain employee records certifications and documentation.
- Ensure compliance across California payroll and multi-state operations.
- Maintain audit readiness for public sector and prevailing wage projects.
- Partner with leadership on workers compensation insurance and regulatory risk.
Recruiting & Talent
- Build and manage internal recruiting processes.
- Develop referral pipelines and trade-focused sourcing.
- Implement onboarding and training systems.
- Support managers with hiring and performance management.
Safety & Field Operations
- Maintain regular presence on job sites.
- Support safety programs and incident management.
- Partner with operations to reduce claims and maintain favorable workers compensation metrics.
Operating Environment
- Combination of office and field-based work.
- Direct interaction with supervisors foremen and senior leadership.
- Role requires independent execution and problem-solving.
- Expected to identify issues and begin implementing improvements within the first 30 60 days.
Requirements
- Experience building HR or compliance systems in construction trades manufacturing or similar environments.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English).
- Comfortable operating in founder-led or family-owned businesses.
- Willing to work in a less structured growth-oriented environment.
Reporting & Compensation
- Reports to the CEO transitioning to VP of Operations.
- Senior-level compensation with performance-based bonus.
- No equity.
Success Criteria
- Organized audit-ready compliance systems.
- Internal recruiting function established.
- Improved safety performance.
- Reduced operational time spent by managers on HR issues.
- Scalable people infrastructure aligned with company growth.
