Job Title Senior Scientist / R&D Chemist Silicone Synthesis & Functionalized Silicones (Baroda)
Location Baroda (Vadodara) Gujarat India (On-site)
Role Summary We are seeking an independent hands-on silicone synthesis R&D scientist to lead the design and development of specialized functional silicones for performance applications. This role sits in our synthesis laboratory in Baroda and requires deep practical capability in organosilicons chemistry reaction development and scale-up readiness-from route selection through characterization and techno-commercial addition to silicone synthesis the role offers strong exposure to adjacent platforms including water-based emulsion polymers and formulation chemistry relevant to coatings and related performance materials.
Key Responsibilities Silicone Synthesis & Route Development
Design and execute synthetic routes for functionalized silicones including (but not limited to):
o Amino-functional silanol-functional alkoxy/alkoxysilane-functional phosphate functional epoxy-functional and polyether-functional silicones
Develop and optimize reactions such as
o Equilibration/ring-opening polymerization (D3/D4/D5) end-blocking viscosity/MW targeting
o Hydrosilylation (Si H addition) and post-functional grafting o Silanol generation/capping and alkoxy conversion strategies
o Phosphorylation/phosphatization approaches where relevant
Establish robust reaction conditions with attention to moisture control catalyst selection inhibition side reactions and impurity management.
Translate lab syntheses into repeatable processes with defined critical parameters (CPPs) in-process checks and SOPs.
Characterization Data Rigor and Troubleshooting
Own analytical plans and interpretation using tools such as NMR ( H/ C/ Si) FTIR GPC/SEC GC-MS titration/amine value hydroxyl value epoxy value Karl Fischer moisture viscosity profiling and basic thermal analysis.
Diagnose root cause for off-spec results (gelation phase separation viscosity drift color/odor incomplete conversion residual volatiles catalyst residues).
Maintain detailed lab notebooks batch records and data packages suitable for internal technical transfer and IP support.
Application Relevance & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with formulation/application teams to connect molecular design to performance targets (wetting adhesion promotion hydrophobization compatibility stability reactivity durability).
Participate in development efforts involving speciality surfactants for emulsion polymers and coatings formulation including experimental design screening and performance benchmarking.
Support scale-up trials with production/operations as needed including raw material selection EHS review and cost-of-goods considerations.
Safety Quality and Lab Leadership
Uphold best practices in EHS (handling moisture-sensitive reagents acids/bases catalysts solvents) waste management and process hazard awareness. Contribute to improving lab capabilities (equipment selection QC methods vendor evaluation and training junior staff as the program grows)
Qualifications Required -
MSc or PhD in Chemistry (Polymer/Organic/Organosilicon preferred) or equivalent industrial experience.
10 years of hands-on synthesis experience with strong independence in experimental planning and troubleshooting (flexible based on demonstrated capability).
Demonstrated experience in organosilicon chemistry and/or polymer synthesis with strong wet-lab execution.
Solid command of analytical characterization and the ability to link spectra/data to synthesis decisions.
Ability to run multiple projects in parallel document rigorously and deliver reproducible results.
Preferred-
Direct experience with silicone fluids/resins/elastomer intermediates silane coupling agents functional silicone surfactants or silicone-polyether systems.
Experience with hydrosilylation catalysts (Pt-based inhibitor strategies) moisture-sensitive systems and viscosity/MW control.
Exposure to emulsion polymerization reactive surfactants or coatings formulation (water based systems a plus).
Prior work supporting scale-up process development or manufacturing transfer.
Key Technical Competencies (Representative)-
PDMS architecture control (end-blocking chain stoppers equilibration kinetics)
Functional group introduction and quantification (amine value OH value epoxy value residual Si H)
Compatibility engineering (silicone organic interfaces; solvent/non-solvent behavior; stability)
Productization mindset (spec setting QC methods repeatability cost and supply constraints)
