Job Summary

Introduction

THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year but can be extended.

Supplemental Questionnaire: A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing. Failure to submit the Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification.

DESCRIPTION

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Alameda County Probation Department is to protect the public safety by providing supervision services support and opportunities to our clients on behalf of the people of Alameda County through quality supervision leadership services and effective partnerships.

THE AGENCY

The Alameda County Probation Department is an essential element of the Countys system of public protection and human services. The Departments role is to reduce the impact of crime in the community by providing accurate comprehensive and timely information and recommendations to the Courts providing community-based sanctions and treatment for offenders and working cooperatively with law enforcement agencies and community organizations with similar objectives. The Department provides a wide range of mandated and discretionary investigative advisory and supervisory services to adult and juvenile probationers pursuant to State law and the County Charter.

THE POSITION

Under supervision leads the work activities of Food Service Workers within the Probation Department kitchen areas; performs routine work involved in food preparation cooking delivery and serving; cleans and keeps kitchen serving dining areas and equipment in orderly condition; and performs related work as required.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

In addition to meeting the established minimum qualifications the Ideal Candidate will possess a demonstrated ability to:

  • Work as the leader of a team and effectively communicate with staff management and youth.
  • Perform effectively in a locked 24-hour facility.
  • Prepare produce heat cook and serve a variety of foods.
  • Show initiative and work rapidly and efficiently in performing job duties.
  • Work cohesively with peers supervisors institutional staff and facility youth.
  • Apply and maintain standards of cleanliness sanitation and personal hygiene.
  • Guide team members and oversee the work of Food Service Workers to accomplish daily and long-term goals.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Either I
    Experience:
    The equivalent of one year of experience in the class of Food Service Worker in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorneys Office Hospital Authority and the Consolidated Courts.)

    Or II
    Experience:
    The equivalent of two years full-time experience in either serving or assisting in the preparation of food in a large cafeteria or dining room which included one year in a lead or supervisory capacity.

    Special Requirement:
    Must be willing to work day evening night and rotating shifts including weekends and holidays.

    All candidates must possess a valid California Motor Vehicle Operators License.

    A thorough background investigation will be conducted of all prospective candidates to ensure they are suitable to work within a 24-hour Juvenile Probation facility before candidates are appointed to this position. Security clearance must be maintained throughout the employees tenure. Failure to maintain departmental security standards may result in termination.

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

    The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

    Knowledge of:
      • Culinary terminology and cooking processes.
      • The common equipment and utensils used in food preparation.
      • Proper methods of food serving and food handling.
      • Modern kitchen cleaning methods supplies and equipment.
    Ability to:
      • Follow detailed written and oral instructions and learning quantity food serving and preparation techniques.
      • Learn how to use coffee urns stoves dishwashing machines and related quantity cooking equipment.
      • Work effectively with a wide variety of people.

    EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

    THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

    1. A review of applicants applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
    2. A review of the supplemental questionnaire to determine best qualified. Those candidates considered the best qualified will move on to the next step in the examination process.
    3. An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidates final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises.

    CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION.
