$9552 for each 4 or 5 unit course. The Fight & Intimacy Choreographer position is equivalent to 0.5 course load: $4776.

Purpose:

The Department of at Santa Clara University a Jesuit Catholic university seeks applicants for Quarterly Lecturer (non-tenure track) positions to teach courses in Theatre production - fight and intimacy choreographer. Specific assignments will be made according to the academic qualifications of the individual and programmatic need.

Santa Clara University is on the quarter system and the quarters are 10 weeks long with an 11th week for final examinations. The successful candidate will teach no more than 2 courses in any quarter and no more than four courses over the fall winter and spring quarters. All classes will be presented in- person however if the county health and university health conditions deteriorate the successful candidate may be asked to teach part of the course online.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MFA in Theatre Arts/Production or a closely-related field. Applicants who are ABD or possess a Masters degree accompanied by commensurate academic experience in Theatre Arts/Production or a closely-related field (5-7 years of college or professional teaching) will be considered.

  • Professional theatre experience in fight and intimacy choreography with positive references.

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching Theatre Arts/Production at the college level.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Ability to carry out professional duties of position working with department directors designers technical director and student work actors.

  • Collaborative work style and strong organizational skills.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with inclusive pedagogical practices that advance SCU goals of diversity and equity.

  • Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.

  • Certification through the Society of American Fight Directors or current association with other reputable stage combat organizations.

  • Certification through Intimacy Directors & Coordinators or current association with other reputable intimacy professionals organizations.

  • Certification through or current association with a reputable Mental Health Coordination organization.

  • Commitment to teaching theatre and dance within a liberal arts context.

RESPONSIBILITIES

TEACHING (100%)

Teaching duties will not exceed more than two courses in any quarter and no more than four in any academic year. Duties include but are not limited to:

1) Coordinate with the director a vision for and choreograph all fights and intimacy needs in the Spring productions of Exit Pursued by a Bear and Head Over Heels.

2) Conduct 2 evening rehearsals per week for each production as scheduled with the director during the regular rehearsal period (Mon-Fri 6-10pm) from March 30 April 21 2026.
3) Attend if necessary all day technical rehearsals on Saturday and Sunday May 2-3 and May 23-24 2026.

4) Attend if necessary dress rehearsals Tuesday through Thursday May 5-7 and May 26-28 2026.
5) Attend design and production meetings if requested.

6) Mental health support for cast during staging of violence and psychologically vulnerable scenes.

7) Designate and train a member of the cast as Fight Captain to coordinate warm-ups and pre-show practices for all choreographed fights during the performance run.

8) Fulfill other instructional or academic duties as appropriate as may be requested by the Chair of the Department.


SERVICE (0%)

This position does not require any service duties. You may be invited but not required to attend department meetings or activities.
