The LA County Board of Supervisors has unanimously ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency in response to the windstorms and wildfires including the Palisades and Eaton Fires that have devastated communities across the County. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to assist the County in mobilizing resources and support needed to help our residents recover and rebuild. The County of Los Angeles Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Chief Fire Fleet Services vacancies related to this unprecedented natural disaster.

Under the emergency order applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

During your initial work period you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.

Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Chief Fire Fleet Services.

Essential Job Functions

  • Plans organizes directs and evaluates the work of the fire fleet services program. Directs the fire equipment repair shop and the field maintenance and repair operation through subordinate supervisors.
  • Prepares the budget and monitors expenditures for the maintenance repair and replacement of automotive fire apparatus and support vehicles.
  • Develops long-range plans and goals for fleet operation.
  • Develops and controls apparatus testing and repair procedures to assure compliance with Insurance Service Office (ISO) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
  • Directs investigations of vehicle accidents where mechanical malfunction is indicated and of other causes of equipment failures in order to develop and maintain a cost effective preventive maintenance program and to develop specifications for new equipment.
  • Directs and participates in the preparation of specifications for new fire apparatus considering such factors as available funding Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements emission control requirements and Departmental needs.
  • Conducts inspections of fire apparatus manufacturing companies to determine their ability to build apparatus and conducts pre-bid and pre-award conferences to ensure their understanding of the specifications and performance standards.
  • Coordinates the development and monitoring of the Departments apparatus repair contracts and directs the inspection of new apparatus during the construction phase and prior to acceptance for the Department making sure that specifications and applicable law and regulations are being complied with by the manufacturer.
  • Coordinates the loan rental and disposal of fire apparatus and other equipment. Directs repair activities at major fires and emergencies assists in the operation of the Departments emergency center and directs the recovery of out-of-service apparatus.
  • Directs the inspection of automotive equipment of jurisdictions requesting annexation to the Consolidated Fire Protection District provides estimates of the fair market value and makes recommendations for acceptance or rejection of equipment. Supervises the maintenance of records on all apparatus including maintenance and repair histories.
  • Assigns equipment to various locations in the Department.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Option I: Two years experience at the level of Assistant Chief Fire Fleet Services* in the service of the County of Los Angeles.

Option II: Four years experience either: 1) supervising staff engaged in the procurement inspection repair and maintenance of heavy fire fighting apparatus; or 2) managing the operations of a large private or public fleet of automotive and power equipment.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Some positions may also require a California Class B Driver License and a California Class A Driver License.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class II Light:This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending stooping or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
