The City of Oakland Strategic Planning Division is seeking a mindful and motivated individual to assist staff with long-range planning projects. Current initiatives include updating Oaklands twenty-year-old General Plan such as revisions to the Land Use and Transportation Element Noise Element and Open Space Conservation and Recreation Element as well as creating a new infrastructure and Facilities Element. Additional projects include implementation of the Downtown Oakland Specific Plan and the Environmental Justice Housing and Safety Elements.

The intern will also collaborate with the Digital Division a vibrant and integral part of the City of Oaklands Planning & Building Department which delivers innovative technology solutions in partnership with the Information Technology Department. This role operates at the intersection of planning technology and communication working with both internal and external stakeholders to support impactful projects and contribute to a better Oakland for the community.

  • Experienced creating clear accessible content for public audiences using visual and design tools (e.g. Adobe Illustrator InDesign Photoshop).
  • Familiar with the City of Oakland and the needs of its diverse communities including experience with community engagement methods.

What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Conducting project-specific data gathering background research and analysis related to planning and zoning issues.
  • Preparing clear and detailed materials to communicate findings including memos reports presentations and maps (using GPS).
  • Quickly learning and using new technology tools and collaborating with Digital Division peers to help deliver technical solutions.
  • Assisting with planning coordination and execution of community engagement outreach and education efforts.
  • Creating outreach and engagement materials such as email announcements presentations social media content and videos.
  • Attending community meetings and synthesizing community feedback for staff and stakeholders.
  • Creating and maintaining documentation related to technology tools workflows and processes.
  • Supporting staff with related tasks and special projects as needed.
  • Conducting project-specific data gathering and analysis.
  • Preparing clear detailed research materials including memos and PowerPoint presentations.
  • Assisting with planning and executing community engagement activities such as developing outreach materials attending community meetings and synthesizing community feedback.

Minimum Requirements for Application

Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications may be acceptable. The following requirements are guidelines as the appointing authority has broad discretion in filling position in this classification.

Education:Current enrollment in a Masters degree program from an accredited university in public administration public policy environmental sciences/studies or closely related field.

Experience:None required however the following is highly desirable: Experience in organizing analyzing and managing large amounts of data; preparing charts tables and reports; using Energy Star Portfolio Manager or GIS systems; preparing public information and outreach materials.

License or Certificate: Individuals who are appointed to this position are required to maintain a valid California Drivers license throughout the tenure of employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.
