The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is a leader in historic preservation and manages several museums historic sites and programs that celebrate Prince Georges Countys rich history. Coordinated by the Natural and Historic Resources Division (NHRD) there are 5 M-NCPPC historic house museums that are open to the public including the Riversdale Historic Site and Museum.

Riversdale a National Historic Landmark and designated NPS Network to Freedom Site is seeking an Outreach Cordinatorfor the Riversdale Historic Site and Museum grounds to join our team. Constructed between 1801-1807 Riversdale interprets life in 19th Century Maryland inclusive of the shared history of the Stier Calvert and Plummer families. Rich in primary source material the Museum is undergoing a transformation by expanding its interpretation to be more inclusive of the lives and labor of the enslaved indentured and free black communities at this historic site and creating a more descendant driven and visitor centered experience.

Riversdale Historic Site and Museum employs a small staff with many projects and responsibilities that are team-based. The candidate for the Outreach Coordinator position will need to be able to execute assigned tasks but also able to identify work that needs to be accomplished. The successful candidate will be responsible for liaising with external partners and organizations which include but are not limited to: school communities churches senior centers and community centers. This position will also create marketing material for Riversdale including but not limited to compiling editing and publishing the museum newsletter coordinating and serving as the point person for social media and resource addition to the primary duties the candidate will also be required to provide support for front-facing operational duties public programs activities and special events. The candidate will be able to work independently and satisfactorily complete these tasks and meet deadlines. The rate this position pays is dependent on experience and qualifications in conjunction with the sites operational budget.

This candidate will support the Riversdale Historic Site and Museumin upholding the four strategic pillars of the Natural and Historic Resources Division (NHRD).

This job is year-round with up to 30 hours per week.

Examples of Important Duties

Outreach and External Partner Liaisons:

  • Act as a liaison with external organizations.
  • Build relationships with schools community groups and stakeholders.
  • Organize and present events both on-site and in the community.
  • Identify community partners.
  • Represent the museum at meetings conferences and events.
Marketing and Communications:
  • Develop and distribute educational content and marketing materials.
  • Design mailers posters and flyers for programs and events.
  • Manage the RecTrac data entry for distribution to the ParksDirect website and to be printed in the Guide.
  • Compile and distribute monthly museum newsletter.
  • Develop an itinerary for continued translation of all Riversdale front facing materials for public consumption in collaboration with NHRD marketing director and Public Affairs and Community Engagement Unit.
Program Support and Evaluations:
  • Send post evaluation surveys.
  • Compile data from surveys or other sources to provide insight visitor experiences.
  • Assist in research and implementation of new and current public programs for the general audience and work closely with Museum Program Specialist for department needs.
  • Work with other Riversdale staff to develop and run public programming special tours and workshops.
Visitor Service and Operational Support:
  • Coordinate with Volunteer Coordinator to recruit train and manage volunteers for outreach activities.
  • Weekend Manager-on-Duty Serve as the front-line staff during open hours. Open and close the facility greet visitors answer phones sell tickets and process payments registrations and refunds using point of sale software. Occasionally support rentals.
  • Lead tours as needed.
  • Operate M-NCPPC vehicles.
  • Provide support for the Director Riversdale Historic Site and Museum and other staff at the Visitors Center for operations and special events at the Museum.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for the position:
  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Two or more years of relevant experience
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs
  • Valid Maryland drivers license
  • Bilingual Speaker
Preferred Qualifications for the position:
  • Bachelors Degree in related field
  • Public Speaking Experience
  • Experience promoting and evaluating museum events and programs


Supplemental Information

May be subject to medical drug and alcohol testing.

Candidate will:

  • Self-motivate and be able to work independently and organize tasks.
  • Learn the basic history of the site.
  • Interact with the public and give tours.
  • Write articles for newsletters volunteer bulletin and social media.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Supplemental information:
  • The position is year-round part-time up to 30 hours a week with some evenings and weekends required.
  • The position qualifies for sick leave but not other benefits.
  • A background investigation will be completed prior to hire.
