This position serves as the Director of Student Excellence and Achievement within the Student Affairs Division. It is a progressively responsible position with overall responsibility for providing leadership vision support and coordination for a variety of programs projects activities and services within the Division. This position will work under the direction of and on behalf of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs (VCSA) collaborating with section heads and unit leads to foster students attainment of educational objectives persistence toward graduation and intellectual and interpersonal success. This position will provide leadership and the vision for serving the developmental and programmatic needs of assigned target groups through the crafting planning and implementation of a variety of learning experiences that teach students critical thinking purposeful reflection effective communication leadership and planning skills.
The primary purpose of this position is to promote and maintain a positive campus environment that supports and promotes student learning student success and student growth through proactive and purposeful student affairs programs and services by leading supporting and coordinating the efforts of section heads and unit leads within the Division. Included in this leadership and support will be the complete cycle of program development from ideation implementation and evaluation strategic and long-range to short-range planning collaborative problem-solving etc.
Support may be in any areas of student affairs as assigned including enrollment management servicesto recruit admit and financially support student enrollment; student academic success initiativesincluding academic advising first-year/sophomore year experiences college success support programsfor under-represented groups and other target groups; student health& wellness programsincluding psychological services health education & medical services; student lifeincluding chartered student organizations registered clubs and organizations campus center operations leadership education student programming etc.; and career development servicesamong others.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching Research & Specialized Educational Service (40%)
- Teach post-secondary level courses on college student success including student learning student development and student growth in various modes of instruction (in-person online hybrid etc.) as assigned.
- Teach counsel and advise assigned student groups as they navigate the college experience including providing instructional coaching to students on how best to advocate on their own behalf with faculty peers and others.
- Teach and advise students in both instructional and co-curricular settings about the value and benefits of co-curricular involvement engagement and employment opportunities.
- Teach and advise students to use online and in-person resources and tools offered by the campus which empower them in making academic progress towards timely degree completion in problem-solving issues and concerns that arise in self-directing towards resolution and in charting their pathways toward successful degree completion and interpersonal growth.
- Create implement and evaluate a comprehensive variety of quality and proactive instructional activities and educational experiences through individual group and other program interventions. These activities and experiences include orientation workshops first-year transition advising seminars satisfactory progress consulting interventions student success courses and workshops student development instruction senior project/internship coaching etc. to support students in creating a meaningful matriculation and developmental college experience.
- Partner in the development implementation and evaluation of marketing and outreach approaches to communicate University policies and procedures about college traditions and academic expectations as well as to ensure that students are taught and advised about the intent rationale and philosophical approach underlying such policies and procedures. This involves but is not limited to researching relevant literature in higher education and student affairs and reviewing and analyzing best practices from peer and benchmark institutions.
- Design implement and evaluate a variety of training and instructional initiatives to regularly promote the professional and individual development of staff faculty and students to ensure their learning growth and success as leaders college community members and responsive citizens in order to maximize their time in the academy. This also includes teaching and advising staff faculty and students in all facets of issue handling including but not limited to:
- facilitating collaborative problem-solving and strategic thinking processes;
- comprehensively analyzing issues or challenge areas;
- creatively generating alternatives;
- identifying impacts on branch operations policies and practices;
- selecting appropriate courses of action; and
- developing action steps to ensure that issues or challenges are resolved.
- Gather interpret analyze and maintain data on students to evaluate the impact of Division services and institutional initiatives designed to teach students about their own self-empowerment to persist towards their educational objectives and career goals.
- Conduct research of literature exemplary practices institutional approaches etc. to consistently and intentionally serve the distinctive and changing needs of a range of student populations.
- Conduct research that informs program practices service development student development and related areas for assigned target groups services etc.
- Provide consultation and other related services to students faculty staff communities and organizations in areas pertaining to educational and institutional research on student access and success. This includes but is not limited to serving as a resource building capacity and development of persons and systems conducting training analyzing policy offering technical assistance and other educational outreach.
- Assist in program evaluation efforts required for extramural as well as institutionally funded projects including providing internal formative and summative evaluation efforts conducting evaluations of programs and services and publishing evaluation results in technical analytical and interpretive reports.
Operational Professional & Community Services (55%)
- Provide general administrative management of facilities services finances and operations related to the Divisions activities programs and services as assigned.
- Oversee the recruitment interviewing selection advising training supervision and evaluation of paraprofessional intern practicum student assistant and volunteer peer mentor staff involved in the divisional and section activities programs and services.
- Partner with others in the development interpretation implementation and revision as needed of appropriate policies and operating procedures related to assigned Divisional services programs and facilities working closely with others to review and evaluate such policies and procedures. This includes serving as the key interpreter and teacher of campus policies on behalf of the division with students faculty staff and others.
- Participate via institutional and/or personal membership in various national professional associations appropriate to the position (e.g. American College Personnel Association National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Native Hawaiian Education Association Native Indian Education Association Council for Opportunity in Education National Association for Developmental Educators National Council on Student Development etc.).
- Serve and provide leadership on University-wide committees planning efforts and programs appropriate to the position.
Other (05%)
- Provide instructional leadership and management skills and knowledge to include serving in absence of supervisor as requested.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate from a college or university of recognized standing in college student services higher education education counseling social sciences social work business administration or related field. Candidates who are All-But-Dissertation (ABD) may be considered; however selectee must have their Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree conferred by their employment start date.
- The equivalent of three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in providing educational instruction services or assistance to students in higher education.
- Considerable knowledge of the purposes and objectives of student affairs administration or higher education.
- Considerable knowledge of methods materials practices procedures techniques and concepts related to student development student success student learning and the co-curriculum.
- Ability to plan organize and implement administrative and organizational processes as applied to the management strategic visioning and analysis of policies operations services facilities and programs.
- Ability to select supervise manage train and develop professional staff and others in a collaborative team-based environment.
- Ability to independently assess and evaluate student needs and to design a program of service delivery responsive to those needs.
- Ability to conduct instructional design and delivery program development and program evaluation.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems draw valid conclusions develop alternative recommendations and implement recommendations in support of goals.
- Demonstration of effective written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals especially from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Ability to interpret and apply legal and policy provisions to situations consistently.
- Demonstrated ability and/or experience in securing competitive grants conducting and publishing research work in peer-reviewed journals in the related fields.
- Ability to work outside normally scheduled business hours including evenings and/or weekends as needed by Division requirements.
Desirable Qualifications:
- The equivalent of four (4) years of progressively responsible professional experience in providing educational instruction services or assistance to students in higher education.
- Ability to be flexible and adaptive at a fast pace challenging and changing environment.
- Experience with presenting research at local and national conferences.
- Demonstrated ability to buildrapport and manage collaborative partnerships.
- Experience generating extramural funding.
