Role Overview:
AVD Workforce Connect LLC is sourcing on behalf of a Client who is hiring a Histology Laboratory Operations Manager (Hands-On) for a direct-hire full-time W-2 position based onsite in South Burlington Vermont. This is a high-impact long-term opportunity within a rapidly growing medical diagnostics organization expanding its laboratory footprint.
This role is intentionally designed for an experienced histology professional who wants both technical ownership and operational leadership. Approximately 50% of the role is hands-on histology bench work with the remaining 50% focused on laboratory operations staff supervision and site leadership. You will serve as the primary on-site authority for histology quality workflow and day-to-day laboratory performance at a newly launched laboratory site.

About the Client:
This Client is a Medical and Diagnostic Laboratories organization specializing in digital pathology and sub-specialty diagnostic services. The organization partners with physician practices physician-owned laboratories hospitals and healthcare systems nationwide.
The Clients mission is to improve patient care and outcomes by delivering advanced sub-specialty diagnostics and state-of-the-art technology. Services include digital pathology diagnostics hospital pathology support and affordable digital pathology software solutions provided without any capital investment supporting modern and efficient laboratory workflows.
As part of continued expansion the Client is launching a new laboratory location in Vermont and is seeking a highly autonomous professional to support both technical and operational success.
This position is being exclusively supported by AVD Workforce Connect LLC the Clients retained recruiting partner.

Key Responsibilities:
Hands-On Histology:
  • Perform histology procedures including tissue processing embedding microtomy staining and quality review.
  • Demonstrate Day-1 proficiency in all core histology techniques.
  • Troubleshoot bench-level technical issues to ensure accuracy and turnaround times.
  • Provide hands-on coverage to maintain continuity of operations.
  • Follow laboratory quality standards policies and documentation practices to ensure adherence to established guidelines.
Laboratory Operations and Leadership:
  • Manage daily laboratory operations workflow and turnaround times.
  • Supervise train and support laboratory staff initially consisting of one histology technologist with anticipated growth.
  • Set schedules approve time off and support onboarding and training.
  • Oversee inventory supplies and equipment readiness.
  • Maintain inspection readiness and alignment with quality and regulatory standards.
  • Identify inefficiencies operational risks and opportunities for improvement.
  • Serve as the primary onsite escalation point for technical and operational issues.
Autonomy and Problem-Solving:
  • Work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision.
  • Balance hands-on bench responsibilities with operational leadership.
  • Implement practical solutions in a fast-moving growth-stage environment.

  • Stable laboratory workflow and consistent turnaround times.
  • High-quality histology work performed independently.
  • Effective supervision and support of laboratory staff.
  • Operational issues were identified early and resolved proactively.
  • Leadership confidence in the stability and readiness of the Vermont laboratory.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelors degree in Clinical Laboratory Science Medical Technology Biology Chemistry or a closely related life science.
Certification:
  • ASCP HT (Histotechnician) or ASCP HTL (Histotechnologist).
    (HTL preferred within qualified candidates.)
Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on histology laboratory experience.
  • Day-1 proficiency in core histology techniques.
  • At least 1 year of prior experience supervising training or mentoring laboratory personnel.
  • Experience working in high-complexity laboratory environments.
Role Competencies:
  • Ability to independently perform histology bench work.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory quality standards and workflows.
  • Ability to work autonomously and make sound operational decisions.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for extended periods while performing histology bench work.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods while completing administrative documentation and computer-based tasks.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for handling specimens operating laboratory equipment and performing fine motor tasks (e.g. microtomy embedding).
  • Ability to lift move and position materials and equipment up to 25 pounds (e.g. specimen trays supplies reagents).
  • Ability to bend reach and perform repetitive motions during laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to visually inspect specimens and slides including color differentiation and fine detail recognition.
  • Ability to work in a clinical laboratory environment including exposure to chemicals biological specimens and laboratory equipment with appropriate safety protocols.
