FLSA Status: ExemptThis is a hybrid role. Applicants must reside in the DMV area (District of Columbia Maryland or Virginia) to be considered.Position SummaryThe Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing and executing the organizations day-to-day financial operations with a strong emphasis on nonprofit accounting compliance and reporting. This role blends Director-level leadership with hands-on Controller responsibilities ensuring the accuracy integrity and timeliness of all financial activities.The Director of Finance provides operational financial leadership maintains strong internal controls and ensures compliance with nonprofit federal and grant-related requirements. This role is highly execution-focused and is well-suited for a nonprofit finance professional who thrives in a hands-on environment and values mission-driven work.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesFinancial Operations & Accounting Oversight- Direct and perform monthly quarterly and annual financial close processes
- Ensure accurate general ledger maintenance reconciliations journal entries and supporting documentation
- Supervise accounts payable accounts receivable payroll processing and cash receipts
- Maintain standardized closing schedules and checklists to ensure timely completion
Financial Reporting & Analysis- Prepare and present monthly financial statements budget-to-actual reports and variance analyses to leadership and program teams
- Produce financial reports for executive leadership program leadership and Board or Finance Committee review
- Support preparation of audited financial statements and annual financial disclosures
- Respond to internal and external financial reporting requests
Budgeting & Financial Monitoring- Lead the annual budgeting process for organizational and program-level budgets in collaboration with department managers
- Monitor actual revenues and expenditures against approved budgets providing variance analysis and recommendations
- Support program managers with budget tracking forecasting and financial adjustments
- Maintain documentation supporting budget assumptions revisions and approvals
Compliance Audit & Internal Controls- Ensure compliance with GAAP nonprofit accounting standards federal regulations and grant requirements
- Serve as primary finance liaison for independent auditors DCAA auditors and internal reviews
- Oversee preparation and filing of Form 990 payroll tax filings and applicable state registrations
- Maintain document and enforce accounting policies procedures and internal controls
Cash Management & Financial Administration- Monitor cash flow and oversee bank and account reconciliations
- Manage banking relationships and authorized financial transactions
- Oversee credit card programs expense reporting and reimbursement processes
- Support insurance renewals and the financial aspects of employee benefits administration
Federal Grants & Contract Accounting- Oversee financial tracking and reporting for federal contracts and grants ensuring compliance with funder requirements
- Support indirect cost rate calculations cost submissions and required compliance reporting
- Ensure accurate labor distribution timekeeping and payroll allocation reporting for grant-funded activities
Team Leadership & Coordination- Supervise and mentor accounting and finance staff assigning operational responsibilities and ensuring professional development
- Ensure work is completed accurately timely and in compliance with established policies and procedures
- Provide training guidance and oversight to promote consistency and compliance across finance operations fostering a culture of continuous improvement and adherence to best practices
Qualifications- Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance required
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) strongly preferred
- 7-10 years of progressive nonprofit accounting and financial management experience
- Demonstrated experience with nonprofit audits federal grants and compliance requirements
- Strong proficiency in Excel and nonprofit accounting systems
Preferred Experience and Attributes- Background in mission-driven or grant-funded nonprofit organizations
- Hands-on experience functioning in a Controller or senior accounting role
- Ability to balance leadership responsibilities with detailed accounting work
- Strong commitment to accuracy accountability and ethical financial practices
Compensation and Incentives- We offer a salary range of $105000 to $150000 based on skills and experience.
- We offer competitive sign-on bonus of $5000 subject to standard eligibility requirements.
