About the Position

Provide operational support to Western Washington Universitys Lakewood Waterfront Facility and on water activities namely during periods when the Lakewood Operations and Community Programs Manager (OCPM) is not onsite. Assist with overseeing a safe welcoming and accessible non-motorized boat rental program (the Lakewood Boathouse) for students and the university community. Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of all boats and safety equipment as well as the facility docks and 15-acre grounds. Assist with providing supervision mentorship leadership development and technical training to Lakewood student employees. Collaborate with and support university programs utilizing the facility.

This is a temporary position; less than half-time; depending on need.

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity inclusivity and anti-racism (e.g. self-educating personal experience attending courses/workshops volunteering/working with organizations that support underrepresented people etc.)
  • Two or more seasons of experience working and/or teaching at a waterfront facility or equivalent program
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of the principles of small boat operations: canoes kayaks windsurfers rowboats small power boats and/or sailboats
  • Effective interpersonal collaboration and communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more the following areas:
    • Boat maintenance and rigging
    • Facility and grounds maintenance
    • Group outreach and facilitation
    • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 lbs. (boats trash bins tables chairs etc)
    • Have or obtain First Aid and CPR certification
    • Have or obtain Washington Safe Boaters card
    • Have or obtain a WA state drivers license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience working at Lakewood
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Sailing and/or paddling instruction
    • Windsurfing instruction
    • Performing assisted and unassisted water rescues from a small powerboat
    • Effective risk management/mitigation and decision making in safety situations
    • US Sailing Level 1 smallboat instructor certification
    • Wilderness First Aid or Responder (WFA/WFR) certification

Salary$26.25 - $29.92/hour depending on qualifications and experience
Benefits InformationTemporary staff are eligible for employer-paid Public Employees Benefits Board (PEBB) insurances if they work an average of half time or more (480 hours: 80 hours x 6 months) in a consecutive six-month period with at least eight hours or more in each of the six months. This position is not currently benefits eligible.
