This is a hybrid position with a mix of in-office and remote work. Work arrangements will be discussed with the hiring managers per departmental guidelines.

Your role

Reporting to the Director Business & Rights Acquisitions and In-House Production (French Services) you will be the lead expert in negotiating and establishing the framework for all agreements with copyright collectives and talent unions governing CBC/Radio-Canada French Services in-house production operations including master agreements with key content providers.

Your key responsibilities

As the primary liaison with talent unions collectives and content providers (such as news agencies image banks and music libraries) you will provide cross-functional leadership to Programming Finance Industrial Relations Legal Services and other relevant departments. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Setting operational priorities and helping develop negotiation strategies that align with the Corporations goals and financial framework.

  • Documenting and drafting in-depth analysis reports to support negotiations and providing strategic recommendations that factor in business financial and reputational impacts.

  • Serving as a key resource in renewing collective agreements and contracts with talent unions and collectives.

  • Negotiating business terms for master agreements with news agencies image banks and music libraries ensuring all material usage aligns with the Corporations licensing strategies and financial framework.

  • Helping balance competing departmental needs and working in synergy with CBC to establish consensus positions when required.

  • Acting as the subject matter expert for the interpretation of agreements and developing guidelines or parameters to standardize business practices across the organization.

  • Analyzing documenting and resolving talent union grievances as they arise.

  • Maintaining constructive ongoing professional relationships with union partners and other rights holders.

What you bring

  • Five or more years relevant experience working with talent union collective agreements in the Canadian audiovisual industry.

  • Knowledge of collective copyright management mechanisms in Canada.

  • Familiarity with the operations of image banks music libraries and news agencies.

  • Proven ability to lead complex negotiations in a unionized or copyright management environment while protecting the organizations financial and reputational interests.

  • Strategic mindset with the ability to translate varied business needs into consistent negotiation positions and a creative approach to problem-solving.

  • Strong writing and synthesis skills (e.g. for issue briefs and executive summaries) with a high level of attention to detail.

  • A natural ability to build respectful constructive relationships with clients colleagues and union representatives.

  • University degree or equivalent in law business administration or other relevant field.

  • Fluency in English and French spoken and written.
