The Toronto Star has one vacancy in the Columnist classification in the Editorial Department. Columnists can be assigned to any newsroom department across a variety of assignments. The initial assignment will be in Business.
Toronto Star columnists lead the public debate on the important issues of the day with well-reasoned arguments and insightful observations influencing decision-makers and engaging Star readers.
The successful candidate will be a deeply-sourced and experienced journalist who brings us unique angles and ideas based on their reporting and personal experience and who can turn those ideas into compelling columns written with perspective and insight that engage readers. Beyond commentary a columnist is expected to break news provide feature storytelling and build a personal connection with readers.
The initial assignment is to engage a readership centred in the GTA with business finance housing and economic commentary opinion and analysis delivered though a variety of platforms. The Stars business section is focused on holding businesses and organizations to account for how they treat consumers workers the environment and the communities they operate in and this should be reflected in the tone and approach of pieces.
Qualifications :
- A deep knowledge of business finance politics and capital markets
- An understanding of the topics and issues most important to residents of the GTA
- Access to experts and insiders in the areas of business finance politics and capital markets
- Interviewing and newsgathering skills and the ability to draw out subjects and gather the relevant information to bring a column to life
- Skilled writer and storyteller who embraces presenting ideas commentary and analysis to audiences in innovative ways
- Relentlessly high standards and self-initiative that enable the crafting of several engaging and thought-provoking columns on deadline each week
- Able to write on a breadth of relevant topics with different perspectives
- A well-developed personal brand and distinctive voice
- Desire to engage readers through multi-platform storytelling including the written word video podcasts and live events
- Commitment to work with editors to find the stories that best connect with the Stars audience
Salary: $98151.04
