Description of Work

This Sanctuary Dive Technician is the lead dive technician for the statewide Oyster Sanctuary Program. The primary purposes of this position are: 1) conduct monitoring and sampling activities on oyster sanctuaries often in low visibility while using SCUBA in adherence to approved sampling protocols and the DMF SCUBA Dive Safety Manual; 2) oversee the proper maintenance and servicing of SCUBA diving equipment; 3) assist with planning of dive operations including field sampling and annual trainings; 4) assist with planning and construction of oyster reefs; and 5) data entry for accurate collection of biological data and record keeping of dive operations. Variable schedules including extended workdays overnight stays & weekend work will sometimes be required. This is an intensive field position with extensive on the water time required. Ability to lift 75 lbs. operate & maintain vessels up to 50 feet in length. Operate & maintain tow vehicles trailers and heavy equipment such as forklifts front-end loaders & dump trucks.

Key Responsibilities:
Assist biologists with SCUBA operations while maintaining support of dive equipment and spaces timely and accurate record keeping via hard-copy forms and digital database and direct communication with the DSO regarding SCUBA operations.
Assist with oyster sampling efforts using SCUBA to estimate oyster sanctuary performance
Entering and checking biological data ensuring quality and accuracy
Assist with additional Habitat and Enhancement operations including material stockpiling material deployment and biological sampling programs
Perform maintenance on trucks boats trailers and outboard engines
Safely operate trucks boats trailers and heavy equipment

The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the states marine and estuarine resources. The DMFs jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore. Agency policies are established by the nine-member Marine Fisheries Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. North Carolina is a member of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the National Shellfish Sanitation Program. Minimum Education and Experience

Associates degree in one of the agricultural biological engineering environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in environmental or natural resources management work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
