The George Institute India

The George Institute a wholly owned legal not-for-profit Indian research institute has been conducting research related activities in India since 2002. The George Institute Indias mission mirrors that of the parent organization namely the discovery and implementation of solutions to chronic and disabling health problems through research policy development and capacity building.

A number of large-scale projects in population health systems and clinical research funded by a diverse group of sponsors both public and private are conducted in India. The George Institute India comprises two distinct operating groups: Research and Development and Infrastructure and Resources. It has two separate offices - in Hyderabad and New Delhi where the research staff and senior management are based.

Context and Role

The context of the role is the project titled: leveraging role of AI to strengthen cervical cancer screening through capacity building.

This program is linked to two ongoing projects within the TGI

  1. WHO Collaboration center for emergency critical and operative care and
  1. Program for global surgery and trauma

The person recruited through the project will be a part of WHOCC -ECO. Current project is an ICMR funded project to strengthen cervical cancer screening by leveraging use of AI. The project is a collaboration between TGI and Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre ( CCHRC) at Silchar in south Assam. Currently the CCHRC is running cervical cancer screening by HPV testing through ASHA workers. Workers are trained by hospital nurses in the field. There are field level challenges that ASHAs face due to inability retain or revise training material difficulty in convincing women in the population to get tested for HPV answering their queries arising from myths and lack of awareness. Hospital nurses need to support while the ASHAs are in the field. This may be difficult at times to sustain. Hence this project aims at building an AI-powered mobile app will be co-created with the field and staff. TGI AI and smart health teams will then create the app in the second phase. App will contain:

  • Training materials
  • Assessments
  • Self-paced training module
  • Chatbot to respond to the queries in the field

Third phase: this app and AI will be piloted in the field and will be implemented in Silchar South Assam.

Reporting Relationships

Project Officer will report to Senior Research Fellow Global Surgery and Trauma and Program Head Global Surgery and Trauma for the larger linked project of Program of Global surgery and trauma

Leads and manages a team of: Field technical support at CCHRC

Duties and Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate between the field staff and the TGI teams.
  • Provide scientific input to the project.
  • Provide intellectual input to the project including developing ideas and strategies for implementation.
  • Support implementation of the project within the larger linked Program of Global Surgery and Trauma.
  • Plan risk-mitigation strategies and identify next steps.
  • Prepare project reports and support overall project coordination.
  • Contribute to intellectual property generation.
  • Coordinate between the data statistics and SMART Health teams.

As a Team Member:

  • Be responsible for the research/administration/planning of this project under the larger project of Program for Global Surgery and Trauma ( PGSAT)
  • Participate in team meetings and activities relating to PGSAT project overall and own work area
  • Contribute and write research publications related to this project and PGSAT as a larger project
  • Participate in special projects to improve processes tools systems and organization;
  • Take responsibility for personal learning and development and for setting achievable and meaningful work objectives and managing personal targets meeting obligations of the Institutes Performance Management and Development Policy;
  • Demonstrate commitment to GIs values including performing to an exceptionally high ethical standard and focus on integrity collaboration and teamwork in all efforts.

As a Team Manager:

  • Ensure direct reports understand and comply with GIs Policies and procedures standard operating practices ethical practice (with respect to research) and the legislative environment.
  • Be responsible for managing performance of direct reports including the completion of plans and agreeing on work and personal objectives and reviewing such plans and objectives in accordance with GIsPerformance Management and Development Policy.
  • Act as a role model and ensure the teams commitment to GIs values ensuring direct reports perform to a high ethical standard and focus on integrity collaboration and teamwork in all efforts.

Work Health and Safety

  • Comply with GIs Work Health and Safety Policy and related procedures and similar policies which apply when visiting the premises of affiliates and collaborating sites.
  • Promote and contribute to a safe secure environment for staff and visitors.
  • FOR MANAGERS Ensure direct reports understand and comply with safe work practice and procedures.

Skills Knowledge and Experience

  • We are looking specifically for a person with educational qualifications from medical or paramedical educational background.
  • The person should have a research experience of two years in managing or working in cancer and surgery related projects leading student teams and has demonstrated analytical and strategic thinking.
  • Preferably keen to pursue PhD in similar cancer related topic through the project.
  • Demonstrated capability to produce outcomes and achieve objectives within agreed time periods
  • Based preferably in Delhi so can be easy to coordinate with various departments even within TGI since some/ most of the PIs are working form out of Delhi

Education:

  • Post Graduate Degree including the integrated PG degrees with three years post qualification ExperienceorPhD

Added preferable:

  • If not already PhD the person should be Willing/ aspiring to pursue PhD in cancer and other related subjects through this project
  • The person needs to have clinical (medical or paramedical educational background) which will immensely help the project with intellectual inputs progress clinical implications and risks and understand and help building contextual content through coordination during all three phases of the project.
  • Based preferable in Delhi so can be easy to coordinate with various departments even within TGI since some/ most of the PIs are working form out of Delhi
