Job Summary:

The Department of Neurology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is seeking an Accountant to join our team of administrative professionals. We invite qualified candidates to apply we offer a fun dynamic and collaborative environment with opportunities for partial remote work. This position will prepare review and conduct complex financial processes and procedures under the general supervision of Department Leadership. This position requires understanding of numerous policies and procedures including University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) UW Foundation (UWF) and UW Health (UWH). This person will assist with post-award processes procurement transactions payroll budgeting financial reporting and other duties as assigned.

  • This position may require some work to be performed in-person onsite at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely at an offsite non-campus work location.

  • This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.

  • Applicants for this position will be considered for the following titles Accountant I Accountant II and Accountant III. The title is determined by the experience and qualifications of the finalist.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Organizes prepares and updates financial statements monthly and year-end journal entries accounts ledgers and reports for various financial needs within an automated financial system to ensure accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions
  • Prepares and/or approves financial transactions and payments
  • Answers questions and provides accounting related information to internal and external stakeholders according to established policies and procedures
  • Provides and prepares budgets and projections based on existing data and established policies and procedures
  • Assists with accounting and reviewing reconciliations journal entries schedules and reports
  • Develops and maintains automated financial systems recommending controls to ensure system reliability and data integrity
  • Prepares and analyzes financial data reports and records identifies discrepancies investigates recommends and implements solutions as needed

School of Medicine and Public Health Department of Neurology Administration

The Department of Neurology at the University of Wisconsin provides state-of-the-art care for people afflicted with diseases of the nervous system conducts research in basic and clinical neuroscience and offers medical students residents and fellows intensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders. The Departments mission of clinical service research and teaching is pursued at the University Hospital the Middleton Veterans Administration Medical Center the School of Medicine and Public Health and in a diverse set of clinical outreach sites within the state of Wisconsin. The faculty and academic staff of the department currently consist of over 150 individuals engaged in a broad range of clinical and academic activities. Neurology faculty and academic staff include neurologists neuropsychologists and scientists who are engaged in basic and clinical research and also contribute to educational programs of the Department. There are more than 28 trainees in a variety of residency fellowship and postdoctoral programs.

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $60000; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; specifically Excel.

  • Attention to detail work well under pressure and deadline driven.

  • Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated independent critical thinking and decision-making skills.

  • 1-2 years prior experience processing financial transactions in accounting systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Proficient in accounting systems specifically Oracle Cloud and Workday.

  • 2-3 years prior accounting experience in an academic medical setting.

  • Prior experience at UW Health School of Medicine and Public Health or UW Madison.

  • Knowledge of University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) UW Foundation (UWF) and UW Health (UWH) policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of HIPAA requirements.

  • 1-2 years prior experience in post-award accounting.

Education:

Bachelors Degree preferred; focus in Accounting Finance Business
