Job Summary

JOB TITLE: Medical Assistant

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Responsible for performing or assisting with a variety of tasks in a clinical setting including: patient preparation physical and ACCU check pregnancy testing instrument care. Communicates with patients physician offices and testing facilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Pre Op Manager / PACU Manager

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior health care experience and/or training is preferred.
  • Basic computer knowledge.

REQUIRED LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Certification preferred;
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Current BCLS certification

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Clinical duties include taking medical histories and recording vital signs preparing patients for examination assisting the physician during the examination and discharging patients from the recovery department.
  • Perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the pre-op/pacu areas for the physicians and other health practitioners running smoothly.
  • Prepares pre-op/pacu bays for patient visits; measures vital signs data collection and appropriately documents information.
  • Document current medications.
  • Instructs patient how to prepare for the physician (assisting as necessary).
  • Anticipates/sets up special equipment and/or supplies needed for the visit.
  • Alerts the nurse when patient is ready and communicates pertinent clinical information.
  • Cleans and prepares bays for next patient.
  • Responds to needs to expedite visits and keep on schedule.
  • Assists the nurse with patient care during the visit.
  • Adheres to hand hygiene and standard precaution guidelines.
  • Provides care appropriate to age group of patients in practice setting and documents data per practice protocols age-appropriate vital signs measurements.
  • Restock supplies in pre-op/pacu as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of clinic policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Skill in gathering and reporting patient information
  • Skill in written and verbal communication and customer relations.
  • Ability to work effectively with patients medical staff and external agencies.
  • Ability to deal courteously with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to accurately efficiently and professional perform in a complex and busy health care environment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as an integral part of the patient care team.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and effectively handle high volume of interactions required.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) a plus.
  • Maintains competence through continuing education.
  • Meet requirements for CEU re-licensure (if applicable)
  • Attends all facility in-services
  • Assist in orientation of new employees as directed.

PHYSICAL / MENTAL DEMANDS:

Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal surgery center environment.

  • Ability to be on your feet for long periods and lift or turn disabled patients.
  • Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment.
  • Ability to concentrate for periods of up to four hours
  • Ability to communicate verbally both in person and on the telephone
  • Ability to use computer keyboard and to view a computer monitor
  • Standing: 66-100%

  • Lifting: 0-50lbs. as needed
  • Carrying: 0-25lbs. as needed
  • Pushing: 0-400lbs. on wheels with assistance as needed
  • Climbing: 1-5 flights of stairs as necessary
  • Pulling: As necessary while providing patient care
  • Bending: Proper bending necessary to pick things off the floor
  • Squatting: As necessary while providing care
  • Rotating: Shoulders as necessary
  • Kneeling: If necessary while providing patient care
  • Reaching: overhead while providing patient care
  • General comments: Visual and hearing senses must be adequate to provide patient care.

ENVIROMENTAL / WORKING CONDITIONS:

Normal busy surgery center environment. This would be a climate-controlled environment. Occasional evening and/or weekend work.
