Role Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic empathetic and proactive Behaviour Mentor to join a primary school in Bishops Stortford Hertfordshire. This school is committed to fostering an inclusive safe and nurturing environment where every child can thrive academically socially and emotionally.

As a Behaviour Mentor you will work with pupils who face challenges in managing their behaviour regulating emotions or maintaining engagement in learning. Children supported may experience SEMH (Social Emotional and Mental Health) needs ADHD anxiety low self-esteem or difficulties forming positive peer relationships.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building trusting relationships with primary-aged children delivering structured support and collaborating with teachers and pastoral staff to create personalised strategies that meet each childs unique needs.


Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role

The Behaviour Mentors role is to support children in overcoming barriers to learning caused by behavioural and emotional challenges. Your work will focus on both proactive and reactive support:

  • Proactive support: Deliver structured 1:1 mentoring and small group interventions to help pupils build self-confidence social skills and emotional resilience.

  • Reactive support: Provide timely guidance during behavioural incidents helping pupils manage emotions repair relationships and return calmly to learning.

The school uses a trauma-informed restorative approach recognising that challenging behaviour is often a form of communication. As a Behaviour Mentor you will guide children in understanding their feelings developing coping strategies and engaging positively with peers and adults.


Key Responsibilities

In Bishops Stortford your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering 1:1 mentoring for pupils who require additional emotional or behavioural support.

  • Leading small group sessions that focus on social skills emotional regulation resilience and problem-solving.

  • Supporting children within classrooms to maintain focus engagement and positive behaviour.

  • Providing support during unstructured times such as playtimes lunchtimes and transitions to promote positive social interactions and reduce incidents of conflict.

  • Calmly de-escalating challenging behaviour using restorative and trauma-informed strategies.

  • Supporting pupils after incidents to reflect on behaviour repair relationships and develop positive strategies for the future.

  • Collaborating with teachers SENCOs and pastoral staff to develop and implement individual behaviour support plans.

  • Maintaining accurate records of interventions incidents and outcomes.

  • Promoting restorative practices empathy and problem-solving skills among pupils.

  • Ensuring compliance with safeguarding policies and maintaining professional boundaries at all times.

  • Relevant qualifications in education pastoral care or child development.
