Role Overview

As a Behaviour Mentor you will work with primary-aged pupils who may experience difficulties managing their behaviour regulating their emotions or engaging fully in learning. Many children you will support may have SEMH (Social Emotional and Mental Health) needs ADHD anxiety or attachment-related challenges. Others may require guidance in developing self-confidence managing transitions and improving peer relationships.

Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role

The purpose of the Behaviour Mentor role is to support children in overcoming barriers to learning caused by behavioural and emotional challenges. Your work will focus on both proactive and reactive interventions:

  • Proactive support: Deliver structured mentoring sessions and small group programs to build emotional resilience social skills and self-regulation strategies.

  • Reactive support: Provide immediate guidance to children experiencing distress or behavioural challenges helping them return calmly to learning.

The school employs a trauma-informed restorative approach to behaviour recognising that challenging behaviour often signals unmet needs. As a Behaviour Mentor you will guide children in understanding their emotions recognising consequences and learning positive strategies for managing behaviour.


Key Responsibilities

As a Behaviour Mentor in Stevenage your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering 1:1 mentoring for pupils requiring additional behavioural or emotional support.

  • Running small group sessions focusing on social skills self-regulation resilience and conflict resolution.

  • Supporting pupils in classrooms to maintain focus engagement and positive behaviour.

  • Providing assistance during unstructured times such as break times lunchtimes and transitions to promote social development and reduce conflict.

  • Calmly de-escalating challenging behaviour using restorative and trauma-informed strategies.

  • Supporting children after incidents to reflect on behaviour repair relationships and develop strategies to prevent recurrence.

  • Collaborating with teachers SENCOs pastoral staff and leadership to create and implement individual behaviour support plans.

  • Maintaining accurate records of interventions incidents and outcomes.

  • Promoting restorative practices empathy and problem-solving skills among pupils.

  • Upholding safeguarding policies and professional boundaries at all times.

  • Relevant qualifications in education pastoral care or child development.
