Role Overview

We are seeking a motivated empathetic and proactive Behaviour Mentor to join a primary school in Hitchin Hertfordshire. This school is dedicated to nurturing the social emotional and academic development of every child and values inclusion pastoral support and high-quality teaching.

As a Behaviour Mentor you will work with pupils who require support managing behaviour regulating emotions or engaging effectively in learning. Children you support may face challenges including SEMH (Social Emotional and Mental Health) needs ADHD anxiety low self-esteem or difficulties forming positive peer relationships.

Your role is central to creating a positive structured and inclusive environment in which children feel understood supported and capable of success. You will work closely with teaching staff pastoral teams and leadership to ensure every pupil receives consistent and personalised support.


Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role

The Behaviour Mentors role is to support pupils in overcoming barriers to learning caused by behavioural and emotional challenges. You will provide both proactive and reactive support:

  • Proactive support: Deliver targeted mentoring sessions social skills groups and structured interventions to help pupils build resilience confidence and self-regulation.

  • Reactive support: Offer timely support during behavioural incidents helping pupils manage emotions repair relationships and return calmly to learning.

The school implements a trauma-informed restorative approach recognising that challenging behaviour often signals underlying needs. As a Behaviour Mentor you will help children understand their feelings develop coping strategies and engage positively with peers and adults.


Key Responsibilities

In Hitchin your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 mentoring for children requiring additional emotional or behavioural support.

  • Leading small group sessions to develop social skills self-confidence emotional regulation and problem-solving.

  • Supporting children in classrooms to maintain focus engagement and appropriate behaviour.

  • Assisting during unstructured times such as break times lunchtimes and transitions helping prevent conflict and promoting positive social interaction.

  • Calmly de-escalating challenging behaviour using restorative strategies.

  • Supporting children after incidents to reflect on behaviour repair relationships and develop strategies for improvement.

  • Collaborating with teachers SENCOs and pastoral staff to design and implement individual behaviour support plans.

  • Maintaining accurate records of interventions incidents and outcomes.

  • Promoting restorative practices empathy and problem-solving skills.

  • Adhering to safeguarding policies and maintaining professional boundaries at all times.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous Behaviour Mentor or Teaching Assistant experience in primary schools.

  • Knowledge of SEMH ADHD or trauma-informed practice.

  • Experience delivering 1:1 or small group interventions.

  • Relevant qualifications in education pastoral care or child development.
