Junior and Senior Counselors are responsible for leading the day-to-day Lessans Camp JCC program for the campers while actively supervising campers within the guidelines set by the Bender JCC of Greater Washington. This is an exciting opportunity to work directly with our community and have a significant impact on the experience of our Lessans Camp JCC participants.

The Bender Jewish Community Center in Rockville Maryland is a premier community center at the heart of Jewish life in Montgomery County operating a full scale health and fitness center pre-school day camp and variety of education and arts programs.

Core Responsibilities include:
Supervision and Engagement
- Supervise and engage with all participants (ages 4-21) in programs and activities while under the positions care.
- Know how many participants are under the positions care and know who and where they are at all times.
- Be an active participant by fully engaging during the Lessans Camp JCC day (e.g. playing games modeling positive behavior and knowing campers names).
- Assist the aquatics staff during instructional swim and recreational swim with active supervision of your assigned campers
- Actively participate in specialist-led activities by joining in demonstrating enthusiasm helping campers as needed and ensuring everyone stays involved and on task.
Leadership and Professional Development
- Creatively plan and lead group activity time.
- Effectively motivate and delegate responsibilities as needed.
- Demonstrate emerging leadership skills while assisting with leading the group.
Camper Care
- Collaborate with counselors unit leadership and the Health Room to manage camper allergies within your group
- Assist campers with changing into and out of swim clothing in the locker rooms.
- Assist campers with reapplying sunscreen and provide reminders to rehydrate throughout the Lessans Camp JCC day.
- Assist with managing concerns of assigned campers related to their social/emotional wellbeing.
- Work effectively with co counselor(s) to ensure the physical mental and social well-being of all campers.
Preparation Planning and Organization
- Take daily attendance and return to the camp office daily.
- Assist in the planning and leading of group activity time and downtime.
- Combine efforts with other staff members to ensure programs and activities run smoothly.
- Participate in the daily clean-up of the program area.
Communication and Attendance
- Attend all required sessions orientations staff meetings late stays and trips planned for the group(s).
QualificationsQualifications include:
- Ability to take initiative to solve problems and be willing to seek assistance in solving problems.
- Ability to effectively and in a timely manner respond to requests from others.
- Ability to get on the floor to participate and supervise activities.
- Ability to spend your camp day outdoors and walk and travel long distances.
- Ability to move equipment and supplies as required.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Be accepting of and sensitive to the diverse racial national sexual orientation gender identity abilities religious and cultural backgrounds of everyone at Lessans Camp JCC
- Willingness to be flexible and adapt to changes in schedule responsibilities and Lessans Camp JCC activities as needed.
Priority will be given to candidates who are available the entire camp season starting on June 15 going through August 7.
Additional Information
The salary range for this position is $4000 - $5000 (total pay for the regular camp season). Salary is determined based on experience including previous experience at Lessans Camp JCC.
