Job Summary

Position Overview
Graland Country Day School seeks a dedicated collaborative and innovative Lower School Library Teacher to join its Library and Innovation Department. This is a full-scope teaching role for an educator who is passionate about literacy inquiry and future-ready learning and who thrives in both instructional and operational aspects of a school library program.
The Lower School Library Teacher is an integral member of the department advancing Gralands mission to foster intellectual excellence strong character and a lifelong love of learning. This educator nurtures joyful engaged readers while intentionally teaching foundational future-ready literaciesincluding media literacy research skills and developmentally appropriate digital and AI literacyfor students in Kindergarten through Grade 4 with the ability to support learners across the PreschoolGrade 8 continuum.
This role intentionally blends direct instruction collaboration and daily library operations. The Lower School Library Teacher shares responsibility for the circulation desk supervises students in the library and works in close partnership with the Library Coordinator and Library Director to ensure the library functions as a dynamic student-centered learning hub. Through inquiry-driven instruction and ethical technology use this educator empowers students to think critically explore curiosity and grow in confidence as readers researchers and innovatorslaying the groundwork for a successful transition to Middle School.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning
  • Serve as the primary instructional leader for Lower School library classes
  • Design and deliver engaging developmentally appropriate instruction focused on:
    • Reading for pleasure and reading identity
    • Research and inquiry skills
    • Innovation skills (creativity critical thinking collaboration & communication)
    • Media digital and emerging literacies
  • Demonstrate instructional flexibility by adapting lessons to support classroom teachers align with grade-level goals and respond to evolving student needs
  • Differentiate instruction to support a wide range of learners
  • Maintain strong classroom management practices that foster a safe inclusive and productive learning environment
  • Communicate effectively with families to support student growth
Library Program & Operations
  • Actively support daily library operations including:
    • Staffing and supervising the library and circulation desk before school during the day and occasionally after school
    • Supporting library class checkout
    • Providing ongoing readers advisory for students families and educators
  • Stay current with emerging trends in childrens literature educational technology and library best practices to inform collection development and programming
  • Curate maintain and promote a diverse inclusive childrens literature collection
  • Maintain the library as a welcoming organized and student-centered space
  • Ability to adjust daily hours to accommodate for before school and after school supervision as well as hosting periodic afternoon and evening events.
  • Fulfill recess lunch and coverage duties as assigned

  • Partner with classroom teachers and specialists to support literacy innovation digital wellness and inquiry-based learning
  • Communicate clearly and proactively with students colleagues and families

  • Attend division curriculum and all-school meetings as required.

Qualifications & Requirements
Background & Training:
  • An experienced educator background with Preschool to Grade 4 students preferred.
  • Have a bachelors degree in Education masters degree in Education or Library Science preferred.
  • Library Background preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of childrens and young adult literature.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate technology thoughtfully and ethically into instruction.
  • Commitment to literacy-centered future-ready learning.
  • Possesses strong organization and communication skills.
  • Maintains effective relationships with students faculty administration and parents/guardians.
  • Willingness to pursue ongoing professional development opportunities.
  • Demonstrates ease with technology adoption of the Learning Management System as well as an excitement to research and integrate other technology programs and tools to engage learners.
  • Strong classroom management skills and experience supporting diverse learners.
Physical Requirements:
  • Lifting/Carrying: Must be able to lift and carry up to 40-50 pounds occasionally (e.g. boxes of books) and up to 20 pounds frequently.
  • Bending/Reaching: Frequent bending stooping kneeling crouching and reaching (both overhead and below waist) to shelve materials.
  • Dexterity: Requires good physical dexterity for handling sorting and shelving as well as repetitive hand movement for keyboarding

Compensation and Benefits
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience. Salary is between $58000 - $74000 annually.
