Communications at the North Carolina Department of Transportation
The Communications team at NCDOT plays a vital role in connecting the departments mission goals and projects with the public stakeholders and employees. This team manages a wide range of responsibilities including media relations public outreach content creation and internal communications. Through strategic storytelling visual design and digital platforms Communications ensures transparency and engagement while promoting NCDOTs impact on transportation infrastructure and safety across North Carolina. By crafting clear effective messaging the team helps foster trust and collaboration between NCDOT and the communities it serves.
Job Summary:
The Communications Office at the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is seeking a dynamic and creative intern to assist with communications outreach and content creation. This internship offers hands-on experience in crafting messaging developing multimedia materials and contributing to key communication strategies for a large public organization. The intern will interact with various team members and senior leadership gaining exposure to high-profile projects and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with project outreach by supporting communication plans and strategies.
Write press releases articles internal newsletter content and social media posts.
Create basic graphics photos videos and multimedia content for websites social media and presentations.
Help manage social media platforms including Facebook Twitter/X and YouTube.
Collaborate with team members to develop professional presentations and communication materials.
Support internal and external communications by translating complex information into clear messaging.
Gain exposure to web management media relations marketing and public records requests.
Attend meetings and support Communications Office initiatives as assigned.
Use tools such as Cision SharePoint Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint to support daily work.
Manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines while maintaining professionalism.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:
Academic background or interest in public relations marketing media relations communications or writing.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to create clear engaging content for a variety of audiences and platforms.
Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop InDesign Illustrator Premiere Lightroom).
Familiarity with social media platforms and communication tools.
Creativity adaptability and strong organizational skills.
Ability to balance multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines.
Additional Requirements:
Currently pursuing or recently graduated with a degree in communications public relations marketing journalism or a related field.

Ability to adapt to a fast-paced office environment and evolving deadlines.
Self-motivated and detail-oriented.
Supervision and Work Environment:
The intern will work closely with various members of the Communications Office and participate in regular check-in meetings to track progress and address challenges.

Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors masters or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) within the past year.
- 24 credit hours completed.
- Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
- Has legal right to work in the U.S. and do not need sponsorship
