Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Marketing Manager the Publicist is responsible for ensuring visibility of all new books and building the reputation of McGill-Queens University Press. They write press releases and pitch media working with freelancers where appropriate and find new and innovative ways to bring MQUP titles to the attention of potential book buyers. They are solely responsible for coordinating the submission of MQUP books for review and sharing published reviews with authors and interested partners. They support the editorial production and marketing teams by securing strong endorsements for all new books and submitting final jacket copy on deadline. They serve as a vital contact between the marketing team and our authors providing superior author support in both English and French. They are dynamic they love to brainstorm creative marketing and publicity plans and they are eager to work with colleagues and authors to help MQUP books reach the widest possible audiences.
Primary Responsibilities:
Ensure the visibility of all new MQUP books by writing engaging press releases pitching media directly following up on media leads and reporting on successes.
Coordinate the submission of all MQUP books for review. Work closely with authors colleagues and industry partners to build a comprehensive and up-to-date database of relevant reviewers; ensure that all new books are shipped to reviewers and reports are made available to authors.
Oversee the circulation of received book reviews by sharing with authors selecting excerpts to be used online in future book promotion and on social media.
Write high-quality catalogue copy that provides a strong value proposition for book buyers. Submit clean copy for approval based on tight production deadlines.
Work with authors and colleagues to secure strong endorsements for each new book drawing on knowledge of both the academic and media landscapes; submit along with clean copy to meet production deadlines.
Develop a knowledge of the book publishing and media landscapes; build contacts with key partners to help build MQUPs reputation.
Assist with book launches and other events attending where possible and handling tasks such as invitations coordinating book shipments outreach to local media and author support.
Liaise with authors in both English and French. Serve as a contact between the marketing team and our authors becoming an ambassador for the Press and ensuring author satisfaction with the publication process.

Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
Experience working in scholarly publishing with knowledge of the university press environment an asset.
Bachelors degree; a certificate in publishing would be considered an asset.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft office applications including Outlook PowerPoint Excel as well as database management.
Ability to prioritize multi-task and meet deadlines.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Shows initiative and willingness to go above and beyond to support authors and extend the reputation of the Press.
Superior communication skills preferably in both English and French spoken and written.
