WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

The Juneau Police Department is centrally located in the Lemon Creek area. Civilian Investigators work in the police station handling cases in coordination with Patrol officers and Detectives. Work hours are typically 8:00 AM 4:00 PM Monday through Friday with willingness to work nights and/or weekends as needed. Must be willing to comply with all workplace safety requirements.




Typical Responsibilities

Under general direction plans and conducts criminal investigations for assigned cases.

  • Investigates crimes using standardized investigative techniques.
  • Reviews police reports to become familiar with the case and to determine what audio/video records were made photographs taken and evidence seized.
  • Reads witness statements and determines if witnesses need to be re-interviewed or who may have additional information.
  • Prepares for interviews; contacts and interviews law enforcement officers victims witnesses and involved parties.
  • Prepares photographic line-ups to show to victims and witnesses.
  • Obtains and utilizes bank statements medical records other agency reports phone records court documents security recordings etc. as needed for investigations.
  • Develops familiarity and researches information from social networking sites online search engines and internet public record databases.
  • Gathers and analyzes facts; interprets and applies law rules and regulations.
  • Prepares reports to document case work performed using logic and sound reasoning.
  • Under direction prepares warrant affidavits contacts judges for warrants and files warrants with the appropriate entity.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice Political Science Legal Studies Criminology Psychology or closely related field.


OR

Experience:

4 years of experience which includes work such as assisting in investigative work or legal research; preparing legal documents; conducting searches to

locate individuals and/or assets; providing accurate interpretative information on laws and regulations; conducting interviews; locating and gathering

information and data evidence an/or testimony to be used in civil or criminal proceedings drafting documents in support of attorneys legal work. The

required experience includes City & Borough of Juneau job classes such as a Litigation and Support Specialist Community Service Officer or the

equivalent.


OR

Substitution:

Any combination of experience or related education equal to four years. Post-secondary education from an accredited college may be substituted for

the required experience on the basis of 2.5 semester hours (3.75 quarter hours) of education for one month of experience up to 12 months. *related

course work must be related to the one of the degree fields listed above or a closely related degree field* Criminal Justice Political Science Legal

Studies Criminology Psychology or closely related field excluding general requirement classes.

License:

Alaska Drivers license at time of appointment.

investigative review* and receipt of verified negative results of pre-employment testing for controlled substances ( this includes: new hires short term

temp long term temp transfers from another CBJ department or former JPD employees who have been separated from JPD employment for more than

APSIN Please be aware positions require the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.

  • Marijuana Although marijuana usage is legal in Alaska such drug use is not federally legal. Furthermore according to departmental policy and Alaska law an applicant with marijuana use in the past one (1) year will be automatically disqualified.
