Salary Range

Teaching Assistant (G6) 37960 to 41461 progressing to 42701 for 1.0 FTE once in post. Pro rata for agreed FTE (up to 0.45 FTE).

The role

Northeastern University London invites applications for a Teaching Assistants in Physics. The appointees will support teaching of Level 4 (first year undergraduate) Physics courses.

Appointments will be commensurate with experience and qualifications reflecting a record of demonstrated ability to support teaching.

Core duties include:

  • Lead laboratory sessions under the guidance and/or supervision of subject expert faculty in Newton Mechanics and Electromagnetism including:

    • Measurement of density & errors

    • Motion in 1D and 2D

    • Work and energy on an air track

    • Uniform circular motion

    • Conservation of momentum

    • Maxwells Wheel

    • DC circuits

    • Simple Harmonic Motion

    • RC circuits

    • Oscilloscopes

    • Magnetic force

    • Standing waves

  • Support students during lab sessions recitation sessions or both

  • Assist with equipment set-up and tear-down during lab sessions as required

  • Complete required training and attend coordination meetings

  • Respond to or forward student queries as appropriate

Person specification criteria

To undertake this role the following should apply should you not have the experience below please do highlight where transferrable skills would assist with you undertaking the role. Unless specified all criteria are considered essential.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant area

  • PhD completed or near completion (all but dissertation) or equivalent professional experience in a relevant area (desirable)

  • AFHEA status or equivalent achieved or expected (desirable)

  • Core knowledge of the subject material in Newton Mechanics and Electromagnetism including:

  • Demonstrates through evidence ability to be adaptable innovative and inclusive in assisting teaching lab sessions.

  • Ability to provide excellent personalised support to students in a lab-based setting.

  • Flexibility and capacity to support course leaders in providing excellent educational provision to students including opportunities for experiential learning.

  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills including presentation skills both face-to-face and online

  • Excellent IT skills and evidence of supporting the integration of technologies into learning and teaching.

  • Excellent time-management and organisational skills
