Payroll Specialist

Purpose of role

The Payroll Specialist is responsible for performing end-to-end payroll processes in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with Company and regulatory requirements. This includes preparation auditing distribution and reporting processes providing support for payroll accounting regulatory reporting and filing requirements and providing customer service to internal and external customers. Act as a Workday super user to troubleshoot Workday configuration issues and support related projects. This is a hybrid position requiring a minimum of two (2) days/week working from the office.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the timely and accurate payroll processing of Canadian and US payroll on a biweekly and monthly basis using the Workday payroll system. This includes the analyzing auditing and validation of HR data for hires terminations transfers and various deduction components. Also includes the processing of off-cycle and shadow payrolls as well as other complex payroll functions (i.e. gross up awards fringe benefits).
  • Maintain compliance with federal provincial state and local regulations concerning employment payroll and benefits and process regulatory reporting
  • Payroll accounting processes including the preparation of payroll reconciliations journal and accrual reports supporting the Finance team.
  • Identify and resolve payroll inquiries from internal and external customers escalating to the Payroll Manager where necessary.
  • Participate in Workday update testing to ensure that enhancements and upgrades run accurately and efficiently according to business requirements and prioritization.
  • Act as a super user for Workday troubleshoot issues and work with third-party vendor on more complex system configurations.
  • Support Workday projects as required.
  • Follow quality control measures to ensure accuracy and compliance with internal and external controls.
  • Audit data in Workday to ensure data integrity and compliance with legislation policies and programs and verify that the required documentation and approvals are in place and employee records are complete.
  • Review and document policies and procedures for Canadian and US payroll on an ongoing basis and update as necessary.
  • Develop process improvements focused on increasing efficiency communication and effective customer service.
  • Assist the team in identifying areas where enhancements can be made to streamline existing workflows.

Key Qualifications

  • College Diploma or university degree in business accounting or relevant field
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred
  • 5 years of payroll progressive experience
  • Technical knowledge and proficiency in Workday payroll preferred
  • Experience working with other payroll systems required
  • Experience in accounts payable or other related accounting functions
  • Strong knowledge of US payroll legislation and Canadian legislative requirement including CRA regulations
  • Excellent understanding of accounting fundamentals and payroll best practices
  • Demonstrates proficiency in applying established standards / policies
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel Word Outlook and Teams)
  • Team player with a positive attitude
  • High degree of professionalism and client focused
  • Strong work ethic and ability to deal sensitively with confidential information
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to communicate with various levels of management employees and government agencies
  • Solid problem-solving and exceptional analytical skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and strong decision-making ability
  • Proven time-management and multi-tasking skills; able to manage multiple competing deadlines without compromising accuracy and compliance controls.
  • Ability to work independently and also as part of a collaborative team
  • Exceptional eye for detail with the ability to spot inaccuracies and errors
  • Attention to detail and responsive follow-up
  • Must possess a Customer Service oriented passion

Salary Range:

$53200.00 - $98800.00

The actual base salary for this position will depend on several factors including job-related skills experience and addition to base pay eligible employees may participate in a discretionary variable incentive plan results are subject to both individual and company performance.
