The Physics Department of the University of Otago was the first Physics Department established in New Zealand and physics was a foundation discipline when the University opened in July 1871. The Resonant Optics research group is led by Professor Harald Schwefel within the Physics Department and the Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies.

The role Te mahi

Applications are invited for a Laboratory Technician within our Department working within the internationally acclaimed group of Professor Harald Schwefel.

In this role you will work closely with researchers and students to support experimental research in nonlinear and quantum optics.

Key tasks will include:
Machine ownership of production facilities (maintenance documentation health and safety standards) this includes Femtosecond laser Vapor deposition coater and Diamond turning machine.
Operation of those machines / manufacturing of scientific samples.
Grinding and polishing of optical materials.
Assisting in characterisation of the samples using Optical microscopy Electron microscopy and Atomic force microscopy.
Thorough clean documentation of the manufacturing processes and of the results.
Maintenance and organisation of laboratory equipment: keep track of stock of consumables organise servicing and repairs of equipment.
Ensure the health and safety practices are observed in all workplace activities.
General administrative tasks including ordering of components and consumables.
Other duties as may be required from time to time.

Close working relationships with the local machine shops will allow pathways for further up-skilling.

Demonstrated experience in laboratory/technical environment or engineering.
Good technical background and can-do attitude.
Familiarity or willingness to learn metal working on mill and lathe vacuum technology and safe handling of vacuum systems and 3-d printing and CAD design.
Strong communication skills.
Have good organisational and prioritisation skills.
Be able to work competently and effectively in unsupervised situations.
Have good record keeping skills.

This is a full-time (1 FTE) fixed term position for two years located in Ōtepoti Dunedin.

The salary level for this position is provisionally evaluated as Level 5 ($69931 to $74609. Top of the range $80285) and is subject to change.

We offer competitive salary 5 weeks annual leave a 6.75% superannuation scheme and the ability to achieve real work/life balance.
