Job Summary

Title: Middle School Theater Teacher and Director


Credentials and Requirements:

Masters Degree in Theater Education or a related field preferred or equivalent in teaching (7 or more years strongly preferred).


Primary Responsibilities:

Teach theater classes to Grades 5-8; public speaking coaching in Grade 4; direct and produce student theater productions; collaborate with colleagues to design experiences for students; communicate and partner with parents and grade-level teams.


Hours/Classification:Full-Time Monday through Friday Exempt; In-Person; 10-month position

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design articulate and implement Middle School Theater Program program for a range of learners in Grades 5-8. Teach drama classes in for Grades 5 and 6 focusing on monologues and scene work; fall semester theater elective for Grades 7 and 8 culminating in a play in January; and a semester-long spring musical for the whole Grade 8 class with performances in early June.
  • Lead the Grade 8 spring musical capstone project and team as the producer and director
  • Provide public speaking coaching for Grade 4 students for VIP presentations throughout the year
  • Prepare students for special event performances (e.g. assemblies open house community events)
  • Design lessons that model creativity collaboration communication and critical thinking
  • Draw on multiple genres and a wide range of cultures to guide instruction
  • Identify materials resources and technology needs for program
  • Include use of appropriate technology tools and resources for instruction
  • Create and update class web pages
  • Communicate with parents about the Middle School theater program
  • Attend collaborative discussions and sharing of student concerns
  • Actively participate in division meetings admissions and other school events
  • Pursue relevant opportunities for professional growth and development
  • Evaluate students on a trimester and/or semester schedule with written report cards
  • Supervise students in other venues such as recess lunch field trips outdoor education etc.
  • Participate in an outdoor education trip for 3-4 nights (additional stipend paid)
  • Provide 1:1/small-group student learning support during flex time and other parts of the school day
  • Perform other duties consistent with the above responsibilities


Physical Requirements:

  • This position is 100% on site.
  • Ability to lift and carry packages and equipment up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to walk stand and perform physical tasks throughout the day.
  • Demonstrate normal depth perception
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard operate standard office equipment and use a telephone
  • See and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without vision aids
  • Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone with or without auditory aides


Work Authorization Requirements

  • Clear the Department of Justice background screening (Livescan)
  • Authorized to work in the United States (I-9)
  • Provide health (TB) clearance (an update is expected every four years)
