Clinical Laboratory Technician 1, UWMC Microbiology Lab

Work schedule:

• FTE 100%

• Monday to Friday with rotating weekends and holidays

• Day shift

Whatyoullcontribute:

• Accession test requests track specimensand look up resultsin the Laboratory Information System.

• Batch and un-batch specimens from other divisions and transport them appropriately.

• Operate the WASP to process approved specimens perform daily and monthly maintenance andtroubleshooterrors.

• Process bacterial and fungal cultures for all specimen types.

• Prepare and stain direct smearsincluding but not limited toGram stains KOH prepsTrichromes malaria preps.

• Answer phone calls and direct questions toappropriate personnel.

• Interact with health care providers and respond to questions concerning specimens in a professional manner.

• Trouble shoot specimens issuesandentercases in hc1.

• Follow procedures and knowwhere to find information inMediaLab.

• Collectand cleanglassware collectanddisposebiological wasteand unpack supplies and reagents.

• Must haveworking knowledge of the operation maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment such as biological safety cabinet centrifuge cytocentrifugestomacher fume hood incubators dry bathsrefrigeratorsand freezers.

• Performs setup for bacterial susceptibility testingincluding disk diffusion gradient stripsand microtiter panels.

• Communicate with co-workers so that the specimen processing flows smoothly over breaks and between shifts.

• Behelpfulcourteousandrespectful mannerwith co-workers.

• Keep the work area cleanorganizedand stocked.

Whatyoullneed:

• High school graduation or equivalent AND one (1) year of chemical clinical or public health laboratory experience.

OR

• Completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements such as a license certification and/or registration.
