Job Summary

  • Special Ed Paraprofessional Mentor - District Wide
  • Paygrade 4
  • 6.25 hrs/day
  • Full-time Position - Regular Special Education Para rate plus $1.50/hr more
  • Mileage reimbursed when traveling to different locations during the workday
  • Work Hours: Primarily 8:55am - 3:40pm. May vary if mentoring at High School or Middle School
  • Effective asap

Position Summary

Serves as a trusted advisor providing a sounding board to day-to-day issues the mentee may experience on-the-job and provide alternate perspectives on issues.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides District level training to new hires or those on performance plans to ensure consistent district-wide policies and procedures are followed.
  • Guides mentees using their knowledge and experience towards growing the individual and helping with their success.
  • Observes mentee and provides appropriate and timely constructive feedback.
  • Be a resource and point-of-contact for questions and/or concerns for mentee.
  • Check-in with mentee periodically to evaluate and address their questions or concerns.
  • Encourages the explorations of ideas and learning to mentee.
  • Build mentee confidence.
  • May serve as a backup Special Education Parapro when not performing mentoring role.

Education:

This position requires high school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Currently working in the role that they will be mentoring required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience working in that role in the district required.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience as an Elementary Special Education Parapro preferred.
  • All performance evaluations must be minimally meets all expectations in all areas for the previous five years.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of district-wide policies and procedures related to the role they will be mentoring required.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services required.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing spreadsheets managing files and records designing forms and other office procedures required.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words rules of composition and grammar required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of behavior interventions and supports de-escalation techniques and behavior management plans required.
  • Knowledge of various disabilities (e.g. autism ADHD learning disabilities physical impairments etc) and how they impact learning and behaviors preferred.

Abilities:

  • Ability to read and interpret district policies guidelines handbook and government regulations required.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence required.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form required.
  • Ability and willingness to learn different software systems required.
  • Ability to follow through with outlined behavioral management plans or instruction programs required.
  • Ability and willingness to work cooperatively with others required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and be a good listener required.
  • Ability to solve problems by identifying challenges and collaboratively developing solutions required.
  • Ability to model best practices provide constructive feedback and support professional growth required.
  • Ability to inspire confidence set a positive example and foster a supporting learning environment required.
  • Ability to travel to different locations throughout the day required.
  • Ability to read write and communicate effectively in English to perform essential job duties including but not limited to understanding and following safety instructions responding appropriately to emergency situations completing documentation and interacting with English-speaking staff students community and supervisors required.

Skills:

  • Good verbal and written communication skills required
  • Customer Service Skills required
  • Current CPI training required

Evaluation

Mentors will be evaluated by mentees as to their effectiveness in the role in order to continue in the role.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit use hands to finger handle or feel; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds of files and materials etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus especially due to concentration on a computer screen and small numbers.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is moderate.
