SLD Teaching Assistant Special School
Location: Brent North West London
Start Date: ASAP
Contract: Full-time Monday to Friday 8:00am to 3:30pm
Salary: 90 to 95 per day (PAYE)
A specialist SEN school in the borough of Brent is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SLD Teaching Assistant to support pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) and associated complex needs.
This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a strong interest in specialist education to gain hands-on experience in a highly structured supportive and nurturing school environment. You will work closely with experienced SEN teachers and a multidisciplinary team to support pupils learning communication independence and emotional wellbeing.
SLD Teaching Assistant The Role
- Provide tailored 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SLD in line with EHCPs and personalised learning plans
- Support pupils with communication needs using AAC approaches including Makaton visual timetables symbols and sensory cues
- Assist with differentiated learning activities focused on functional learning independence and life skills
- Support pupils with sensory processing needs and emotional regulation to promote positive engagement
- Work collaboratively with class teachers therapists and support staff to implement consistent SEN strategies
- Help maintain a structured calm and inclusive classroom environment
- Observe monitor and record pupil progress contributing to reviews and multi-agency meetings
- Support pupils during transitions routines and unstructured times throughout the school day
SLD Teaching Assistant Ideal Candidate
- Experience supporting children or young people with SLD or complex SEND within a special school or specialist setting is highly desirable
- A strong understanding of severe learning difficulties communication differences and inclusive SEN practice
- Patient empathetic and adaptable with the ability to respond to individual learning and behavioural needs
- Confident working as part of a multidisciplinary team with strong communication skills
- A Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning SEN or a related field is desirable but not essential
- An up-to-date Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to apply for one
