Job Summary

The Investment Team at The California Endowment is seeking an Investment Analyst Public Investments to join a highly motivated and collaborative team based in Los Angeles Oakland and San Diego California. This position is a 36-month term appointment.

The California Endowment (TCE) resolved to begin a transition to align 100% of its $4.0 billion in assets with its mission also known as going All In while seeking to earn a market rate of return. Given the structure of the existing portfolio responsibly shifting all the Foundations assets toward mission/impact and TCEs vision will be an ongoing and evolving process across a long-time horizon. Implementation will require flexibility and practicality balancing the Foundations payout requirement and financial obligations along with the supply of mission/impact investing opportunities market factors evolving best practices in the field and status of the Foundations assets.

The Investment Team is responsible for investing and managing the Endowments portfolio and bringing about the desired alignment with mission. To support these efforts all members of the Investment Team are responsible for a set of activities and actions that seek best in class managers that can support the dual objectives of generating market rate returns and mission/impact alignment as defined in TCEs Investment Policy Statement.

Position Summary:

The Investment Analyst Public Investments is a 36-month role within a highly motivated and collaborative Investment Team co-located in Los Angeles CA Oakland CA and San Diego CA. Reporting to the Investment Manager Public Investments the Investment Analyst is responsible for supporting work across a range of asset classes including but not limited to global public equities hedge funds and fixed income. The Investment Analyst is responsible for providing analytical support to the sourcing of new investments due diligence on new/existing investments and taking ownership of projects as assigned by the Investment Manager and/or Managing Director.

Position Accountabilities:


  • Provide general analytical support for existing and/or prospective investments including assisting with manager meetings due diligence and preparation of investment memos
  • Assist with the monitoring of existing investment managers by actively participating in manager meetings gathering data on managers and preparing analytical reviews of managers
  • Conduct asset class and portfolio level qualitative and quantitative analysis including gathering exposure information
  • Prepare topical research reports and conduct ad hoc research as required
  • Assist with operational aspects including acting as a liaison between managers Endowment Investment Operations and Endowment Finance
  • Cultivate relationships with institutional peers and managers to stay informed of market trends
  • Develop investment skills and contribute to knowledge sharing amongst the Investment Team
  • Participate in TCE initiatives including training in alignment with Trust Based Philanthropy (TBP) and in support of TCEs mission of Advancing Racial Equity (ARE).

  • Strong analytical quantitative and communication skills
  • Financial modeling skills and general knowledge of portfolio theory and capital markets
  • Self-starter with ability to take initiative and collaborate with colleagues
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Commitment to the Endowments mission and high level of professionalism


Minimum Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree with 0-3 years experience at an endowment foundation family office investment firm or investment consultant
  • While not required progress towards CFA and/or CAIA is a plus

Salary Range:

Target/Full Hiring Range: $93500 - $110000 base incentive eligible
