Position Overview and Responsibilities:

Honeymoon Island State Park is looking for a self-motivated park service professional to fill an Environmental Specialist I position providing visitor services maintenance protection administration and natural resource management. The applicant must possess good visitor service and administrative skills be able to work independently. The applicant must be able to work rotating shifts including evenings weekends and holidays.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Compliance with the processing requirements of Chapter 215.422 F.S. is mandatory. Persistent failure to comply with this section by any agency of the state shall constitute good cause for discharge of employees duly found responsible or predominantly responsible for failure to comply.

This is moderately independent work providing Visitor Services Natural Resource Management Maintenance Administration of Honeymoon Island State Park

VISITOR SERVICES AND TRAINING - Develops talks and programs regarding the parks management natural history facets and needs and presents them to the public and professional organizations. Trains staff to perform technical monitoring in support of research/monitoring projects and in the various facets of ecosystems dynamics so accurate interpretation may be afforded visitors. Assists in the design of natural history exhibits.

NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Monitors ecosystems and their related facets conducting research in areas having utility for future management decisions formulation. Plans and monitors resource management projects including prescribed burning mechanical restoration treatments invasive species control and imperiled species management. Conducts surveys for seabirds/shorebirds and sea turtles. Conducts research relevant to ecosystems restoration and maintenance. Makes management recommendations and prepares pertinent portions of park management plan revisions. Reviews developments and potential encroachments and makes recommendations regarding the minimization of adverse effects upon park resources. Consults with other professionals regarding best management practices and their application. Assembles and maintains species inventories to assess the health of ecosystems and constituent changes

MAINTENANCE - : Assures appropriate maintenance and security of all assigned scientific and support equipment stored in the park biologists office. Maintains cleanliness of workspace and assigned vehicles as well as equipment used. Communities equipment maintenance needs.

ADMINISTRATION Acquires scientific and professional reports and maintains them as references for management guidance. Assembles data and produces reports on biological and physical aspects pertinent to systems management. Develops and maintains files on research monitoring and other activities. Develops budget requests and equipment specifications necessary to support the resource management of the park. Documents all research and activities and maintains a computer database and files.

OTHER Performs other related duties as required

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Plant taxonomy and keying techniques
  • Identification of wildlife with emphasis on shorebirds seabirds and sea turtles
  • Floridas pyric communities management needs
  • Prescribed fire applications and techniques
  • Research design and applications as they relate to ecosystems management

SKILL IN:

  • communicating effectively verbally and in writing
  • accurately preparing reports
  • interacting with all internal and external customers and the general public in a professional tactful and courteous manner
  • utilize a computer including but not limited to software programs such as Microsoft Office Suite
  • utilize all-wheel drive equipment canoes motorized vehicles and motorized watercraft

ABILITY TO:

  • establish and maintain effective working relationships

  • understand and apply rules directives policies laws and regulations

  • comply with male and female hair grooming standards and body art and piercing restrictions

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Drivers License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Graduate Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the physical or natural sciences.
