Job Summary

This position is required to work a set schedule of three days a week at Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens and two days a week at the shops located at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.

Responsibilities:

Visitor Services Attendant:

  • Answer telephone respond to guest voicemails help guests plan their visit
  • Reply to email inquiries on visits photography and facility rentals
  • Greet and welcome visitors and docents provide information regarding hours and admission prices provide information regarding the Shop
  • Provide information and literature to visitors
  • Explain to visitors the various tour options (60 min 90 min or self-guided depending on date)
  • Sell admission tickets using computerized system (opening and closing entering visitor data and reconciling daily sales with Visitor Services Manager Bayou Bend
  • Sell and renew MFAH memberships
  • Scan tickets for guest entry to museum and special events
  • Assist with ease of entrance during high-traffic events (crowd control) as needed
  • Cross-trained to fulfill Visitor Services Attendant responsibilities at gazebo
  • Work with other Bayou Bend staff in a team environment
  • Ensure the safety and positive experience of guests by remaining alert and watchful
  • Work evenings for the month of December during Christmas Village
  • Other duties as assigned

Sales Assistant:

  • Increase shop sales through product knowledge initiating customer contact and rapport using selling techniques to motivate larger total dollar sales and insuring customers satisfaction and return
  • Take special orders and route mailing requests to supervisor
  • Keep a point of sale inventory and alert supervisor to need for special requests reorders
  • Restock assist in merchandising and display and cleaning and straightening of shelves
  • Make cash check and credit card sales
  • Accurately close out count money make sales report and deposits at end of the day
  • Consistently communicate needs/challenges/opportunities/successes to management and/or leads

Skills Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal written and interpersonal skills
  • Enthusiastic and have a desire to be part of a cultural organization
  • Must be able to maintain a professional demeanor and effectively and tactfully deal with visitor complaints and concerns
  • Strong level of interest and basic knowledge of Bayou Bend
  • Able to interact with a diverse group of people from a wide variety of ethnic cultural and economic backgrounds including guests and museum staff at all levels
  • Able to work with minimum supervision and sit for long periods of time
  • Must be able to work outside of normal schedule for special and seasonal events when needed
  • Able to bend stoop perform light lifting and stand for long periods of time
  • Basic computer skills required
  • Good organizational skills

Education and Experience:

  • Some college desirable
  • Experience in museum retail or hospitality industry a plus
  • Customer service or visitor interaction required
  • Previous experience with Tessitura helpful
  • Language in addition to English helpful
  • One or more years experience in sales
