The NC Department of Administration is the business manager for North Carolina state government. The department oversees Government Operations such as building construction purchasing and contracting for goods and services maintaining facilities managing state vehicles acquiring and disposing of real property and operating auxiliary services such as courier mail delivery and the sale of state and federal surplus property. Additionally the department manages many of the states advocacy programs that provide assistance and services to diverse segments of the states population that have been traditionally underserved.

Division: American Indian Heritage Commission
Job Duties: The NC American Indian Heritage Commission (AIHC) seeks a motivated student to assist with statewide public history and education initiatives that celebrate and preserve North Carolinas American Indian heritage. The intern will contribute to three interconnected projects: (1) the NC Indian Schools Trail (2) the AIHC Oral History Training Manual and (3) the Teacher Professional Development Series developed with DNCRs Education Division. Each project supports AIHCs Strategic Plan to promote North Carolina history through an American Indian lens increase visibility of Native cultures and strengthen educator engagement.
Major Task to be Performed:
Conduct research and assist with interpretive text and documentation for the NC Indian Schools Trail(pending Pomeroy Foundation contract approval); Help draft or edit oral history case studies andvisuals for the AIHC Oral History Training Manual; Support coordination of teacher training seminars:process applications create name badges prepare materials and assist with on-site facilitation; Draftshort digital or educational pieces such as lesson plans blog posts or StoryMap content.
Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: A completed research and education portfolio including (1) draft content for at least two Indian School markers (2) a refined section of the Oral History Training Manual and (3) a written reflection summarizing project outcomes and professional learning
Academic Majors Desired: History Education Anthropology American Studies Museum Studies Public History Communications or Native American & Indigenous Studies.
2026 State of North Carolina Internship Period: Monday May 18 Friday July 24 2026
Strong writing research and communication skills; organization and attention to detail; experiencewith Microsoft Office; interest in American Indian history and public education. Familiarity with CanvaArcGIS StoryMaps or Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
This position will close at 11:59 p.m. the night before the end date.
